Help... someone is emptying my account with my debit card

pupuce · 22/10/2006 11:41

Well... just logged on to my account (with Nationwide) to see that several purchases have been made on our debit card for over £2000 yesterday.
We have just called and the card is now stopped and they ahven't YET gone over my overdraft but as I have NEVER been in the red... you cna imagine my stress.. fears... etc!
I can easily spot what isn't ours and we will be writing to Nationwide Visa dispute team but how do these things get resolved ? How quickly ? Will I be liabled for being in the red ? ETC....
Thank you!

i dont know how this works but i do know two people who have had it happen to them and neither have lost out once the bank have dealt with it.

lulumama · 22/10/2006 11:46

usually very quickly..when your card shows unusual transactions, they are usually quick to restitute the money if it is obviously not yor ususal spending patter,

it should be easy to trace where the purchases were made and if not in your area...then backs up your claim..!

do you think it is identity theft or just this one card......

i'd call the visa people and your bank today! or fax / email them to log your card is being used fraudulently now..

eeek..stress ! poor you

pupuce · 22/10/2006 11:48

We have called Visa already and it seems to be 1 card (DH's debit card - we have a joint account)... and they are clearly out of our area purchases....
I just want to be re-assured that I won't loose anything or much.
I spotted it within 48 hours MAX of it hapening.

i'm sure they will refund the money ASAP if it is so obviously fraudulent...still a worry though.....if not identity theft, should be fairly straightforward....

motherinferior · 22/10/2006 12:00

Pupuce, I did a piece on identity fraud for Easy Living this month. I'll email you the copy - it may have some useful stuff there! xxx

My daughter at university had 3 withdrawals in cash in Asocot miles from where she is and 3 days in a row and much more than she'd ever take out. The bank told her about it and the refunded her the money.

TwigTwoolett · 22/10/2006 15:46

DH just had his Egg card scammed .. they called us up .. and refunded all fraudulent uses by next statement .. it was over 1K

good luck .. they tend to be pretty good tbh

zephyrHellcat · 22/10/2006 15:49

pupuce I'm quite surprised at Nationwide .... I recently took dd and ds on a bit of a spending spree and after spending a couple of hundred my card was refused and the woman serving me had to ring the bank and I had to answer some security questions before I couls spend any more because it was 'unusual' spending for my accout....

Hope you get it all sorted asap, I'm sure they won't leave you out of pocket.

pupuce · 22/10/2006 17:29

DH thinks the "thief" wasn't spotted as it was a Saturday.
We have never been in the read but now we aer by over £1000!
This is clearly a professional. It's from his debit card which he still has and we never pay by debit card on the web so how did they get the details ? I am not even sure if the purchases made are online wones... they are in Bradford and Norwich... £400 at Asda Norwich. I never shop at Asda! There are no Asda near me...

Am going through the same thing at the moment - their fraud office (nationwide) tel no. is 01793652829. They will send you a list of the transactions and you mark off the fraudulent ones. Hope you have cardguard.... DH had his card cloned at the petrol station (we think) and they tried to take £1200... they got away with £200 but we should get that back... for you I know how this feels...

northerner · 22/10/2006 18:22

This happenned to my boss just last week on his company credit card, they spect £18,000!

Tv's, beds, Playstations and even a piano for £5k.

Poor you

pandagirl03 · 22/10/2006 23:13

hiya pupuce,

This has happened to dp twice lately. The bank have refunded all the money and even the interest it would of earnt normally this is done between 7-10 days but might be longer for you because of the amount they have spent. They will send you alot of forms to fill in to say you never spent the money etc, you just send them back then they give you your money back. You may have to report this to the police tho because its such a big amount. Dp's card got scammed by a very big well known company, so it can be done anywere. good luck and please dont stress you will get it all back.

hertsnessex · 22/10/2006 23:35

ours was done a while back for around 4k. we didnt notice until i went to get some £££ out and it didnt let me have any. they cancelled the cards, sent us the details and we crossed off what was/wasnt ours. it was all reimbursed and sorted out within a month. our direct debits were still honoured by the banke ven though there was no money in our a/c.

hope this isnt casuing you too much worry, it will be sorted.

cx

pupuce · 31/10/2006 13:09

Just to thank everyone for their reassuring words.
All the money was re-paid back by Thursday (and we notice the theft on Sunday) so incredibly efficient and straight forward!

Had my Natwest mastercard cancelled this week as someone was making unusual purchases with it. Luckily the bank spotted it and rang me to check. But it has happened before, and I've never had to pay for any of the disputed transactions. Have never heard of anyone having lost their own money as a result of fraud. I was offered cardguard by one of my banks, but as far as I could see it was only offering to get me to pay for something the banks do anyway? Willing to be enlightened though!

mummy23 · 31/10/2006 19:03

Hi pupuce,

I had someone use my account over a year ago to pay there barclay card bill and have sky plus installed. I usually check my account daily, but missed it one day and checked the next to see that they had used over £800 from my account, i was on the phone straight away (stressing about the thought of not getting my money back)
To speak to someone very helpful, who explained what i need to do (file a dispute against the payments that i did not make), and the payment was refunded back into my account with 2 days!

So dont stress to much because your bank should cover this, and if they dont change banks!(i'm with abbey)

Good luck getting this sorted.

Hi Pupuce, a similar thing happened to me 2-3 years ago. Someone had obviously cloned my debit card (lloyds TSB a/c) and had been using it while I was on honeymoon (with the said card).... I didn't discover until I got back from h'moon, opened my bank statement (which I normally leave unopened for MONTHS...), saw the transactions and that I had gone into the red and incurred charges, called the stolen card line, reported it, was advised to call the fraud line which I did, and the whole lot was refunded to me, no questions asked, and no proof of anything either. I just had to fill in a form the fraud dept sent me and sign that everything I stated was the truth, the whole truth etc, and it was all fine. The amounts weren't as big as yours, but still, it was reassuring to know that I wasn't held responsible in any way. Good luck with Nationwide, I'm sure they'll do the same for you .

bubbaloo · 31/10/2006 19:28

Glad you got your money back Pupuce. This happened to me when I was pg with ds.I had been saving up to buy things for the nursery when my Abbey card got cloned.Abbey were horrendous and finally after 8 months and me having to go to the financial ombudsman I got my money back, along with £250 compensation.Needless to say I have closed all our Abbey accounts and we even moved the mortgage away from them as I was so annoyed.Everything is now with the Nationwide, who I find excellent,so glad you had a good experience with them.

katiebirdie · 01/11/2006 16:24

dont worry at all pupuce, you will get the cash back, sound like a pretty valuable customer to nationwide. used to work in similar dept for a high st bank and this type of thing is unfortunately very common. normally takes up to 10 days to investigate.
