How can you see whether HMRC have received your payment?

I have submitted my self-assessment and have a large amount to pay in Capital Gains Tax. I made a payment to the HMRC earlier this week using Fater Payments, but am wondering whether there is anywhere under my account where I could check that it had been received?

Hmm, so did I, Reason. I will now go and investigate whether there's any positive confirmation on gov.uk - the money's gone from the account so I hope it's there!

Right, I went to online.hmrc.gov.uk/, chose 'Go to your Self Assessment Overview', logged in, and in the top left corner under 'At a glance' it says you have nothing to pay (hurrah).

For extra confirmation, I went to View Account -> Tax Years and it showed me a summary of this tax year that shows the payment made.

I think its slow at the moment.

I had a sum to pay from last year which cleared my bank account three days ago and my self assessment page still shows that I owe the money.

My self assessment form has gone in and is showing as not received. Annoyingly that means I don't know how much I need to pay and so unless the system speeds up I'm going to have to overpay just to make sure I don't incur any charges by accident.

Usually you get an email receipt don't you if you pay online?

atticusclaw · 29/01/2015 08:11

You don't if you make a direct bank transfer though.

Thanks. After posting, I checked my account and saw that one of the payments had gone in. There is a time lag between the payment leaving your bank account and appearing on your HMRC account. As someone has said above, it's really difficult to track payments. Considering that so many people have to complete a self-assessment, they make it very difficult to navigate!

Mine finally went through this afternoon too. Presumably its just sheer volume which means it takes a while for them to match up payments to the relevant account.

HMRCs online system can take up to three days to show FPS payments received

Ah -well at least if you have your statement to prove you paid on a certain date then you have evidence if you get a query.
