Best bank account, first bank account for 11year old?

I would like to open a bank account for dd for her birthday, she will be 11 and I think mows the time she had her own account and learnt how to look after her money ( also, I havn't got a clue what to get her for her birthday so thought this would be a good idea ).

What's the best bank account to go for? Which bank?

How do I set up an account for her?

I think any of the major banks have the type of accounts you are looking for. DS is with Natwest, as we bank with them anyway. We took him in just after his 11th birthday with his birth certificate as ID. He has an account with a debit card so he can pay for things in shops. Overdrafts are not allowed. He has the Natwest app on his phone so he can check the balance whenever he wants, and we pay his monthly pocket money directly into the account. The account automatically upgrades when he is 16 and at that stage he will be able to pay standing orders from it.

Exactly the same as Sunny Grin my daughters loves having the debit card, she gets a monthly allowance and is pretty good with it.

Thank you, I think I will take her to my bank in half term and sort it out. She would love a monthly allowance, sounds like a great way of teaching her about money and budgeting, she still has money left over from christmas so she can put this into her account, at the moment she's quite good with money as she rarely wants anything, I'm guessing this will change once she's at high school.

Dd has one with barclays. Has a card so can pay in shops, online, take money out but not go overdrawn.

Remember you will need either ID for your dd, probably ID for you. If no ID such as a passport for the child you'll probably need to open an account at whatever bank you bank with as you be allowed to vouch for them as a long standing customer or some such thing. Barclays told me I should have made an appt as well rather than just turn up but did manage to fit us in.

What I have fine with my dcs is to open a saving account.
Halifax has one for children with 3%interest (one of the best you can find atm) and they get a card to withdraw money from an Halifax ATM (the only one to do for 9yo).
I now just transfer the pocket money to the account once a month and they go and put the money from Christmas and birthdays on it too.
When they want something, they go and take some money put from the ATM.
Also as it is a saving account, there is no risk of them getting money they don't have!

I would go with one local to you. I know it sounds silly but being able to go and pay money in is a really nice thing. Also if there are any problems it's much easier to sort them in branch.

I think I will go with my bank as it will be easier, I can set it up so her pocket money goes in each month. Thank you for your help xx
