That doesn't sound right, but you can cut the card up and return it.
I always use debit cards online, I don't own a credit card and I don't want one either.

Did you get her name? I would complain loudly to your bank, I expect she gets commission for every card that she sells. I think it's also bad form for your bank to prevent you from using your card, if it were me I would tell my bank that they are no use to me if I can't use my debit card and I am considering changing to another bank (they really hate it when you threaten to leave, it's always worked well for me).

hairymclary · 09/10/2006 22:08

everything sounds just fine apart from the bit where she applied for the card when you told her not to.
I would complain, strongly.

hairymclary · 09/10/2006 22:10

the security thing is normal, and it is just that, a security check. which is a good thing surely?

SPACEdoutzombieCADET · 09/10/2006 22:16

its not unusual for banks to refuse to allow a card transaction, if they think it might be being used fraudulently, however, the woman who ran a credit card application without your permission was seriously in the wrong. i would complain bitterly.

it's basically to do with how much you normally spend.
they'll have something that alerts them if you spend a particularly large amount (esp as they say, online) which is unusual for you. or if you use it a lot in a short time

SPACEdoutzombieCADET · 09/10/2006 22:28

say you had a big spending spree, more than you usually spend, the bank may become suspicious that someone has stolen your card, my bank are always doing it, its like they are telling me how much i can spend!

milge · 09/10/2006 22:30

the security stop on your debit cards sounds ok, reassuring almost. The unauthorised credit check and unwanted credit card does not. Your bank will probably have taped the call and can playback to confirm that you did not want or request a card.

that's probably it though. if you haven't used it for ages and then there was suddenly a transaction, even though it was a small amount it would have been flagged.

If the same thing happened in a real life shop you'd be able to call for authorisation, but obviously that isn't possible online

janinlondon · 10/10/2006 15:58

Are you sure she ran a notified credit check? On experian or equifax? Because she's not allowed to do that. But if its your own bank they may have only done internal checks?

starsq · 14/10/2006 23:48

report them to fsa they could lose licence bad use of your data you could sue them for running search on your name mate
