Getting a credit card as a sahp

Hello

I'm a sahp at the moment. I have an M&S credit card, I pay it off in full each month but put the majority of my spending on there so that I can collect M&S vouchers (and I also feel better buying online/large purchases with a credit card). The thing is I don't really shop at M&S much so would rather get a different credit card for somewhere I could make better use of all the vouchers.

But am I right that I can't apply for a card in my sole name if I have no income?? I know I could apply for a joint card with DH but he doesn't really want/need another card...

I'm pretty sure I'm right but thought I'd check with MN, as someone always has the answer on here Grin

You were approved a credit card, because you have a good credit rating because you have a card that you pay off in full. Simple.
You are not refused a credit card because of your postcode

Do you have a mortgage?

unlucky83 · 08/11/2014 21:54

birra I was told I'd be refused one as a SAHP purely on lack of regular income! With money in the bank, no mortgage (and they know that cos I did have a small one for a while - they have the deeds) and an excellent credit rating
I wonder if it is because I'm not married to DP?

Birra · 08/11/2014 21:57

Told by who?
Did you make the application?
A credit card application goes on your credit rating.
That is determined by mortgage, previous payment history, regular payments, missed payments, any defaults. Your credit rating doesn't know how much you earn

Birra · 08/11/2014 21:59

It would be a bit silly for credit card companies to assume that because you are a sahp that you have no access to money.

Birra · 08/11/2014 22:03

Titchy-the fact that you pay your m & a card in full regularly is what gives you a good credit rating

Yes we do have a mortgage and several things are in my name (mobile phone, utilities etc) so I don't know if that makes a difference? Would a credit search confirm a link with DH?? Otherwise people could just invent a DP with an come of £100k?!

I was just surprised that with all the irresponsible lending/credit crunch etc that I'd be laughed out of the place for applying for a credit card without an income. I've wanted to switch for ages but assumed I wouldn't be eligible now I no longer work. That's why I started the thread, I really thought it was a no-go.

It does link you with dh, but not with his salary.
From the information they have, you are a very good borrower.

I'm a sahm and have a credit card with 4k limit (I never even remotely go near the limit). When I filled out the form I put the household income as my income, never had any issues whatsoever.

birra said upthread - it was a few years ago - just after the credit crunch - maybe 2009/10.
I didn't make an application but I was put as a joint name on DPs when he got his first one (he doesn't believe in them - I'd persuaded him it would be safer for internet shopping!) - she was surprised I had one in my name as a SAHP - said I wouldn't be allowed one then. And it was Nationwide - they knew I (not DP) owned the house and had lots of money with them (in my name)....said that wouldn't count because there was no guarantee I wouldn't spend it all!!!!

Well my pin number has arrived so I'm guessing it's all gone through...
