Claiming compensation from delayed flight with Thomas cook

Anyone been successful? We were delayed 4 years ago. Worst flight ever with tied young children, arriving over 4 hours late. There was a technical fault ie inflatable landing gear opened spontaneously on flight coming in so needed part from mainland Greece (flying kefalonia to Newcastle). Any success stories and if so, how did you manage it?

it's not* for you to prove cause of the delay

Muchtoomuchtodo · 20/10/2014 10:00

The compensation was probably meal vouchers at the time that you were delayed.

4 hours OP? Get over it.

OP probably means the inflatable escape slides that allow you to get out if the aircraft ditches on water or if there isn't enough time to get the steps. (I think this is what 'doors to manual' means btw - this is when the slides are deactivated for a normal exit, otherwise they fire when the door is opened).

quite important so can understand that they wouldn't want to fly with a faulty one.

you can't claim for a child that didn't have its own seat.

two court cases pending which affect this.

also surprised that anyone would still be chewing over this four years on, or would still have the boarding pass.

I assume OP that your experience was so horrific that you haven't flown since?

Primafacie · 20/10/2014 11:39

This is not about having a traumatic experience - it is about the airline being in breach of contract, i.e. failing to deliver the service the OP paid for. The European regulation was introduced because airlines were taking the piss and routinely denying compensation even where flights were delayed because of mechanical/maintenance problems.

This link explains the parameters for compensation. europa.eu/youreurope/citizens/travel/passenger-rights/air/index_en.htm

Primafacie · 20/10/2014 14:11

No reason at all to use solicitors to do this for you - it is extremely easy to fill the form and send it. Don't give up part of your comp to anyone.

Mechanical issues are rarely 'extraordinary'. It is up to the airline to ensure its planes are in good order and flying condition.

HaHa! We were delayed 18 hours at Heraklion airport inCrete in the summer of 1998 which was the summer people were dying from the heat in Greece. It was hideous. We finally got taken to a hotel where I started hallucinating and being extremely ill with sunstroke. DP called for some water and the hotel staff tried to charge us for it... Finally got back home a day late and got...£25 compensation. We were just relieved not to had any kids with us. It was truly horrible.
