Anyone want to join me in trying to save £50 a week.

Not sure if this is a realistic target but would love to go to Disney Florida in 2016 and hoping to save about £6000. The only way I can see to realistically cut back is food and clothes. Currently spend about £90-£100 for myself DH and 1DD 7 on food and hoped with really good meL planning to get this down to £50-60. Also in line with another thread to not buy any new clothes for a year except perhaps school uniform. I have just bought myself some new winter bits so should be ok but love shopping so could be tricky. Anyone else on board??

No but I am GREAT on economising:

  • Are you getting your electricity and gas from the cheapest supplier? I just switched and based on last year's consumption will save approx £500 this year.
  • Take a look at moneysavingexpert.com
  • cut down on food WASTE rather than simply food, around 1/3 of all food in the UK goes straight in the bin
  • shop around for car / house insurance, moneysavingexpert will help you here
  • I buy my kids clothes on ebay, there are quite a few new-without-tags sellers that clear end of range stuff for some of the brands
  • any toys, scooters my lot have finished with are sold on ebay / gumtree
  • are you on the best mobile phone contract for your usage? many people pay for allowances they don't use

toomuchcoffeetoomuchwine many thanks for that but I am already very good at being thrifty and getting best deals electric, phone etc which is why I think the only savings to be made are food and clothes. Thankfully have also already done nearly all the christmas shopping with some great deals.

I think the first stage is to drop down a brand or two on the food and go back to Aldi / Lidl or do food shop online where less temptation. Smile

last month I shopped about instead of going to do my usual weekly shop I went to various places and saved about £170 over the month.

Home bargains -
B&m bargains
Herons
Lidl
Aldi
Local butchers
And local greengrocers.
I also went down a brand on certain items but not all (dp loves Heinz beans and sauce ;). )

It is doable if you shop about.

Is your DH on board with this plan too? How much do you both spend on general spends and things like coffees and lunches out. A lot of people spend loads on these types of things and can be easy savings if you cut these back to the bone and take packed lunches instead.

Yes DH on board too, both take packed lunches already and rarely have coffee etc out. Need to cut out the couple of bottles of wine a week which definately increase shopping costs. I don't think we have either Home bargains or B&M but will do some research into it.

Your couple of bottles of wine a week @ £5 would give you £1000 in two years. As an added benefit when we cut out the wine at home I lost weight.
