I'm seriously considering using a PPI company

Because I've finally got round to doing something and have realised I shredded most of my paperwork years ago, and most of the cards I had PPI on were closed nearly a decade ago, so I don't think it will be easy to obtain copies of the agreements I signed. I have all account numbers, thankfully, and a couple of stray statements, but no T&Cs or policy documents.

Is there any hope I could sort this out myself without a massive headache, or shoudl I a) use a company as some money back is better than none or b) give up?

DO NOT USE A COMPANY!!!! Just go on to the banks website, most have a dedicated PPI email address or write directly to the bank marked for the PPI department - claims companies do not have any inside information, no special powers and will do what you could do for the price of a stamp, I have claimed over 15k with 7 claims - all myself. it is easy. Do not use a company- hope I made that clear!!! Good luck

FuckYouChrisAndThatHorse · 09/10/2014 13:15

I think Grumpyoldblonde may have been a bit ambiguous. In case it wasn't clear, Don't use a PPI Company!

:o

Grumpyoldblonde · 09/10/2014 13:25

Yep - that is DO NOT!!!!

ouryve · 09/10/2014 13:25

They don't do anything that you couldn't do yourself. Except take a nice big cut, at the end.

Fairylea · 09/10/2014 13:30

Don't use a company!!!

PeppermintInfusion · 09/10/2014 15:58

Can you claim if you don't have your account no anymore, eg credit card no?

Grumpyoldblonde · 09/10/2014 17:06

Yes! Just give them all the information you can, name and address is most important. remember you may not have been mis-sold though, not everyone was

PeppermintInfusion · 09/10/2014 17:16

Think I was as I was a full time student not working at the time. Got the form filled out now.

Fluffycloudland77 · 09/10/2014 17:16

I did mine using the moneysavingexpert forms, I don't have the agreement numbers for all of them. I only posted them yesterday though. I'm a bit late to the the party.

I've just done our credit expert fees too.

donkir · 09/10/2014 17:31

Do not use a company they will take a huge chunk of any monies you may receive. If you have your account numbers and addresses then you can go straight to the banks themselves.
I received nearly £2000

Bankholidaybaby · 09/10/2014 22:37

My accounts were closed years and years ago - definitely over 6 years so there's no paperwork. Wouldn't this make claiming very difficult? I'm not sure I have the time or energy for a big fight. I was a student when I was sold ppi so I'm pretty sure I have a claim, it's just proving it that will be hard/impossible.

Please don't use a company!
A couple of letters to the banks/credit card provider will only cost a few stamps.
Martin Lewis has some great info:

Another one saying don't use a company!
DH has just started the process. He phoned lloyds a while back and they said couldn't find any info so he felt like he'd hit a brick wall (he had no statements or account numbers).
Then we checked MoneySavingExpert. There is a SAR template on there if you google it. SAR stands for Subject Access Request and if you use the template and send a £10 fee the bank legally has to send you copies of EVERYTHING they hold on you. DH got a huge parcel of paperwork from lloyds. Everything going back to 2001.

However, as you have account numbers you may not even need to do this.
I would try calling each bank first with your account numbers. If you get no joy then send the SAR.

Fluffycloudland77 · 10/10/2014 07:50

My cc were closed in 2008-9, It hasn't stopped me filling the forms in. I just tick the box that says I don't have my account numbers.

You're name and address are the important bits & you know them.

TortoiseUpATreeAgain · 10/10/2014 08:10

"My accounts were closed years and years ago - definitely over 6 years so there's no paperwork. Wouldn't this make claiming very difficult?"

No! They'll still have the paperwork. You just need to follow MSE advice, and then the finance companies are obliged to put in all the work looking out accounts and cards and looking at amounts charged.

All a PPI company would do is sit in the middle doing nothing and pocketing a large percentage.

GoldenGoat · 10/10/2014 08:22

Hi OP,
Earlier this year I got £500 from PPI and I had no information either. Card long destroyed, no remaining paperwork.
Most banks/credit card companies will have a form you can fill in. All I did was send a letter saying I believed I was entitled to PPI and the information I did know - address I was living at when I had the card, full name, and DOB - that's all I needed. Got a letter 2 weeks later saying they would investigate, then a cheque a few weeks after that. REALLY easy. No need for the PPI sharks.

Good luck!

Grumpyoldblonde · 10/10/2014 09:28

OP there will be no "fight" If you were a student you should not have had the product, end of.
Claims companies do not have access to your accounts, they don't do any detective work, they just send the same letter you would.
Just write to your bank, give any info you can, and sit back. it really is a very easy process with minimal input from you.

Can I just add one more time, DONT USE A COMPANY!!
Good luck

FuckYouChrisAndThatHorse · 10/10/2014 09:33

Has anyone mentioned not to use a company yet? :o

Op, send the letter with your info to the bank. It's worth the cost of a stamp to give it a go. Use the template on the link up thread and post it.

If after a month nothing has happened then come back.

No harm in trying, is there?

As everyone says, that should be all you have to do :) which in effect is as much work as either posting on here or contacting a PPI company, the only difference being you will save yourself your own money!

ClaireZest · 10/10/2014 10:55

There's also a really useful service which will try to chase lost bank accounts for you: www.mylostaccount.org.uk/
AND it's free! :-)
