Cost of living in UK?

lilacmamacat · 15/09/2014 21:46

We're hoping to move back to the UK within the next 6 months or so (could be considerably earlier than that depending on job interviews in progress...). Haven't lived there since 2006 and could do with knowing how much things like gas, electricity, water etc cost. There's me, DP and DS and we'd be renting outside London probably in or around one of the bigger cities, not exactly sure where yet - would depend on job of course - but at the moment it's looking like Bristol and the south west.

i know it will be pretty variable but any idea of what we can expect to pay for utilities would be very helpful.

I live in West Midlands in a three-bed detached house with a husband and two under-fives. Gas+electricity is around £1,100 a year. Water £36 a month (we haven't got a water meter). Council tax will depend on the area but local authority websites should have that info.

you'll have a nasty shock with fuel prices!

work on roughly £1300 a year for fuel. Rental insurance maybe £120, hopefully less. Landline phone/broadband £330 a year, TV licence £144 a year, water varies wildly depending on area but maybe £1000. Petrol £.130 a litre. Mobiles; what you want to pay. Car costs; MoT, insurance (could be huge unless you've been a named driver), tax, repairs.

rental prices from rightmove. Council tax from local council website.

be an informed tenant; look on gov.uk and remember to check for gas safe cert, deposit protection and to read your contract before signing. And my usual mantra - don't rent a dump!

Thanks special. Def won't be renting a dump! Can't remember exact figures off hand but it looks like what you lose on the swings you gain on the roundabouts comparing UK and IE.
