Help! MIL at end of tether with layabout b*****d brother, needs advice

Ok I'll try and summarise this as best I can. As stated in thread title mil has a shitforbrains brother who lived with and sponged from their mother until she died earlier this year. The house is now being sold as part of the estate. Contracts are ready to be exchanged and completion should be in the next couple of weeks.

Brother has known about all of this at every stage but has been obstructive at every stage. He got a £2000 advance from his share of the inheritance to give him the deposit and month's rent up front he needed when renting a flat. That was in August and has now all gone and no flat found. He now wants more money for the same purpose but in laws have heard that he has CCJs against him which would presumably affect his ability to get a flat.

I feel so sorry for my mil as she is grieving the loss of her Mum, having to sort out all the house stuff herself with only aggravation from him. What happens when the sale goes through and he hasn't found anywhere to go? Is there anything they can do to help things along? (apart from GBH!)

I thought I'd ask for opinions/ideas on here as the solicitor is costing them a fortune due to all the problems brother's causing.

CCjs don't stop people renting a flat, do they? May well affect mortgage agreements but not renting afaik. Did the mother leave a will? If so nmaybe it would be least hassle for her/him to sort all the money stuff out according to that? Sympathies to you and your mil.

Thanks scummy. I don't know about CCJs and renting. I think they may be outstanding (if that makes a difference) and the in laws seem to think it will make a difference with letting agencies

Do the buyers know he is still living there? If not go ahead and exchange. Then the estate has to make the house available with vacant possession so they will have to force him out before completion. if he won't go a court order will be needed but he will obviously realise the writing is on the wall and leave. The council can then house him as he's not been made voluntariliy homeless. It took nearly 2 years to wind up my mother's estate so he's not likely to get his money from the house sale for a good long time but that's his problem.
CCJs might affect him getting a flat if the letting agent checks. Not all private landlords do though. I am sure he can find something.

Thanks xenia. Good advice, I'll pass that on.
