Married persons tax allowance - does it exist?!?

I read recently that one of the Political Parties would be scrapping this - but I didn't know it existed!

I suspect DH and I have missed out, but perhaps some clever MNers will tell us if there's anything we can claim.

We've been married 2.5 years. I've been self employed and filling in self assessments in all that time; always earned under the tax threshold.
DH has been self employed and variously part- and full- time employed in that time - basic rate tax payer on PAYE only, his self employment isn't making a profit, yet.

I certainly don't remember "notifying" HMRC that we'd got married (I didn't even change my name) - so I'm guessing we're not benefiting from the married persons tax allowances. I've looked at the HMRC website, and if I'm right, I should be able to transfer my allowance to DH?

What can we do? Can it be backdated or have we missed out? And what forms do we have to fill in to make sure it's taken into account for this year?

No, it doesn't exist.

Hasn't for many many years.

Think the Tories have talked about the possibility of bringing it back.

It's an old tax relief that's being phased out. You are only entitled if one of you was born before 1935.

LittleBearPad · 08/09/2014 14:35

You'd have to be pretty old to claim anything.

ilovepowerhoop · 08/09/2014 14:36

either you or your spouse would have to have been born before 6 April 1935 to get this tax allowance

Ah-ha! Found it! It's the "transferable tax allowance for married couples" I was thinking of, and it doesn't come into affect until the 2015/16 financial year www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/293790/TIIN_2518_transferable_tax_allowance_for_married_couples_and_civil_partners.pdf

Thanks all!

You'll only be able to transfer a small element of your personal allowance. It's also a Tory policy so likely to be scrapped if Labour win the May 2015 election.

Every little helps - and it'll take a while for it to be scrapped after the election, I imagine!
Even if it's only for a year, it'll probably keep the car on the road for a bit longer! Grin
