Flight delays and compensation

I've just found out, via a very kind mail shot from moneysavingexpert Martin Lewis, that I can apparently claim compensation for a flight delay.
But I'm flummoxed. How do I prove the delay?
My transatlantic flight with BA was delayed by 8 hours last year. I know there are various flight stats websites but they all seem to have data for just the last few days/weeks.
I don't want to go through one of these claim companies as it looks straightforward otherwise...
Any ideas??

I just e-mailed them stating that according to EU Law * if you're delayed by x time that you're entitled to compensation. They firstly tried to get out of it but I threatened reporting them to the Aviation authorities and they paid out.

It was Flybe. They provided a handout that stated all the rules and how much you'd get for each delay which I wrote my request from.

Have you read the detailed MSE guidance? Is there anything else there that is helpful?

In any case, if you know that you were delayed by 8 hours and meet all the other criteria, the airline will have the information anyway, even if it's not easily publicly available.

We're claiming for a 5 hour delay from Barcelona, but using a claims company, because Jet2 have been playing hardball and refusing all claims point blank.

It was clear that we would get nowhere with them without a legal argument about the ins and outs of aircraft maintenance, and I'd rather have an easy 60% of the amount I'm entitled to rather than all of it with a court appearance etc.

But in your case, I think that BA are being much more reasonable? There's also an appeal going through the courts that should set legal precedence and may get finally resolved later this year, so if you're not in a rush for the money, it might be worth waiting until then. Keep an eye on the MSE website as they will always be up to speed with this kind of thing.
