Just got first energy bill and there must be something wrong with the meter!

I just got my first energy bill from E.ON, for new house, been here a month. Apparently I used 900 Kwh electricity in a month! In the old house I used 1200 Kwh in 2 months. Now the only difference I can see from the old house, is that we now have an electric cooker, where as int he old house we had an electric oven but gas rings. Can that really make such a difference? or can electricity leak? What do I do?

I am definitely switchins provider anyway, as the price per KW is far to high anyway, but it's the 900 Kwh in a month that worries me. I have tried to call E:ON but there is so long waiting time that they just tell you to phone back.

PS I am quite sure the meter reading is accurate as I was there when the meter was read.

Right, the hot water breaker was indeed marked B16 as you predicted, PigletJohn. I have switched it off and checked that it didn't turn off fridge/freezer, anything essential. Will see what happens in the next few days no doubt!

No worries about obsession, misscph.

Our electricity bill has been a badge of shame that I have worn for years, but at least I know the reasons for it!

But your bill is smaller than mine, you should be pleased, Walton!

I am thinking perhaps it's the dishwasher, I took it with me from the old house, it's a good Bosch, but it needs checking!

Well, no drama after having turned off the hot water breaker!

Still monitoring electricity meter, nothing crazy yet.

I do have a theory now: When we first moved in (a month ago), the fridge/freezer didn't work, the freezer part was fine, but the fridge part was working very hard but couldn't get below plus 15 degrees Celsius. It took more than a week to get a replacement (I kept frozen 2 x 2 liter water bottles in rotation to keep the temperature down, worked quite well). Perhaps the faulty fridge could have caused the high usage? Plus we also have had a lot of holiday guests staying, so more hot water, more cooking etc. Maybe it will all just even out!

I have learned so much from this thread, thank you to participants! I always thought of myself as very energy conscious, I am from Denmark where energy is taxed, so it's expensive, which means you kind of have to watch your energy consumption. But I have never actually monitored energy use, just tried to be careful. Currently monitoring the dishwasher energy use!
