I am due my first child in few weeks. I currently live with my dad in his house. I give him cash in hand for few things but don't pay bills really just my own things, and same when child comes.

Will they only take my income into account when applying as I'm single person. Also what documents will they require me to send them as proof.

I'm not 100% but they will usually just take your income into account. It's usually just someone who is living with you as a partner. As you live with your Dad they may take his income into account but seeing as you're renting in a way at his then they shouldn't take his income into account. You'd be best off checking out the tax credits website.

Good luck with the birth! :)

The are only interested in a partners income , your dad could be a millionaire his income and they fact that you live with him is irrelevant.

SoonToBeSix · 16/08/2014 15:25

You don't need documents to prove you are single , you only need those if you previously claimed as a couple then changed to a single claim.

Ok so what documents would they request for new application. For example would I have to send off child's birth certificate, bank statements, payslips.

Thank you

I don't remember having to send any documents in, they get all their info from their system. Make sure you register for child benefit as I think they get a lot of info from them. They only ask for documents from you if you're self employed or if they can't get info from childcare providers. Best thing to do is call the tax credits helpline on 03453003900 they'll be able to tell you want you need to do and when. You won't be able to actually claim until baby is born though x

SoonToBeSix · 16/08/2014 16:07

MMolly you don't need to send any documents just phone them once baby is born and tell them the dob. Later on if you claim for childcare you again don't send documents just give nursery info on phone. You only send documents when they do random checks on existing claimants. You don't have to wait until you claim child benefit either I didn't claim child benefit for months.

That's great and I domed question do they do checks on previous address links. I've moved around a lot before moving back in with my dad .

No they don't check previous addresses , honestly tax credits are easy to claim they believe you and then they confirm things later by checking with the benefit agency/ your p60 etc or random checks where you do have to send in a pile of documents.

vickylu1 · 16/08/2014 16:24

I think they ask for previous addresses but I don't think they actually do check checks. It's really straightforward. When you call them they do it all over the phone. They are really helpful and nice there so don't worry. :)

When are you due?

SoonToBeSix · 16/08/2014 17:28

If it's your first baby have you claimed a maternity grant? You need to be on benefits, but if you aren't getting benefits now you can claim up until the baby is 3 months old once you get your tax credits sorted.

Mmolly2013 · 16/08/2014 17:44

39 weeks and I work fulltime so haven't claimed before.

Gosh due any day then belated congrats. Look into the maternity grant once you are claiming tax credits you might be eligible it will depend on your income from April 2013-2014 as far as I know but basically if your tax credit award is more than something like £545 ( the basic child element) a year then you will be entitled but you need to claim promptly once your tax credit award starts. Grant is £500.
