How much do you spend on your weekly shop?

My husband does our weekly shop and plans all of our meals. Last week he spent £150 and he tends to do this every week. he assures me that he doesn't waste anything but i just think this is excessive for the two of us. We do eat meat a lot and have a lot of vegetables etc.

£150-£170 a week
2 Adults
3 teens 18, 16, 15
1 primary age (10)
4 cats
Fish
2 tortoises
2 rabbits
Covers all food, toiletries, pet stuff, cleaning stuff etc.
4 pack lunches a day during term time
All meals in school holidays

Very happy when it is closer to £150 rather than £170

250 per month on me and OH. That is for everything, toiletries, cleaning stuff and two naice two dine for a tenner date night dinners.

I meal plan, batch cook and cook most meals from scratch.

I also click and collect from Tesco and find that I am far more likely to come in "under budget" than if I am traipsing round the supermarket.

I do a stock up of staples at Aldi or Lidl every so often, and pretty much the only premium stuff I buy is posh loo roll and toilet wipes. I have tried to get OH to concede to the cheaper versions but since it is his only extravagance I have let him have his aloe vera loo roll and moist toilet tissue and he does have a lovely bum Grin

For 2 of us and 2 or 3 cats (one is a semi stray that doesn't eat with us full time) we spend a lot less than half that and eat very well with lots of meat etc. Most things from Aldi, except fresh meat which comes from a farm shop.

If he is buying 27 pieces of meat, they should be lasting you most of the week, unless it is fillet steak or you are both body builders.

Does a lot of food get wasted? Could you shop one week at Lidl and not let him see the packaging and see if he notices? I defy anyone not to love their freshly baked bread.

I'd say he's overspending. Things are expensive and things like toilet rolls, dishwasher tablets and washing detergent really bump up the spend... I experienced this at Tesco the other day, I used the scan as you shop system the other day, got all of our food (2 adults, baby, plus weekend visitors) for £60 (including, meat, crisps, ice-cream, wine and a shed load of vegetables) but as soon as I added all of the cleaning type things the total jumped massively to £90. I wouldn't spend £27 on all of my meat for a week, nor would by DH, in fact he was chuntering away at spending £90 on everything!

I don't know you or your DH, but do you think that he might have emotional issues linked to food? I know a lot of people that do...Some people really do try to show their love through food...I'm not saying it's the case, as I say, I don't know him, but it's something I've experienced, so it might be worth thinking about...

I spend £50 all in per week for 2 adults, a 10 year old and a dog. I meal plan, do online shop and don't buy expensive cleaning products

Fluffycloudland77 · 15/08/2014 17:03

£40 for two of us and a cat.

Just been reading this post after spending £170 in asda today. Family of two adults and three children (with very health appetites). Our weekly shop varies from £90 - £120 (usually). When kids are at school £45 is spent on school lunch(which they love) and breakfast club (the only reason they go is so I can get to work on time). I cook nearly everything from scratch. Home made scones where on the menu for breakfast this morning. I do get fed up spending so much money and time preparing food( hubby doesn't cook). We also tend to get a take away once a week. Very rarely buy alcohol . Can't understand why we spend so much. Really don't believe these "feed a family of four on £40 a week" articles.

Passthecake30 · 30/08/2014 13:58

About £85-£90 a week for 2 adults and 2 kids (4&6). Includes beer, baileys and posh crisps for the weekend. I get a delivery from asda, if I go to our local tesco I spend twice as much.

ShadowsShadowsEverywhere · 30/08/2014 14:04

£60 a week for one adult, 2 toddlers and assorted pets. That includes toiletries and cleaning stuff, and I buy large packs of nappies and wipes when they are on offer. That does include "treats" though, if I bought no chicken nuggets, crisps or trifles it'd be a hell of a lot less.

LEMmingaround · 30/08/2014 14:06

We used to spend 80-100 at tesco and need to top up (two adults and 9yo dd) now we shop at aldi its £60 and no top ups.

Apatite1 · 30/08/2014 15:07

Also on 60-70 per week for two adults. Mixture of lidl and waitrose. Very obvious which one is loads cheaper. We aren't big meat eaters though, plus no alcohol at all.

redskybynight · 01/09/2014 09:22

Whether he's overspending depends on what sort of food y ou eat! If you eat a lotof meat and branded products I can see how it is easily possible to spend that much. Equally you can eat less meat and "value" ranges and you'd spend a lot less. Depends how important it is to you (as in both of you) really ...

ChickenFajitaAndNachos · 01/09/2014 15:43

I spend about 150 per week for me ,DH and our two teenage sons. That includes wine but not toiletries or cleaning stuff. We tend to eat butchers meat about once a week, our DSs have packed lunch and DH buys lunch at work. We also spend about 90 per week eating out at the weekend.

150 per week does sound a lot for two people.
