My partner rented a bachelor pad until January 2013 & had npower to supply electric. He was always in credit & happy about it but unbeknown to him, they put his direct debit down to ten pounds a month due to his credit. After moving out, he got a bill for £700!

As they never notified him of the direct debit change, they seemed to accept fault & never got back to him about a final Payment.

Now, over a year and a half later, they've just sent a reminder.

We have no means to pay this back now we've a mortgage & baby on the way. Can anyone advise? X

I've had the exact same treatment. In fact so bad I went into therapy because of them. I also got a £700 bill not once but twice and they've wiped my account out more than once. I hate them!

You can arrange to pay it over x amount of months. I've been in this position a few times Blush

The facts are that it's still an amount he owes so it will have to be paid (as long as you're sure it's not the bill of the tenants after who gave a dodgy meter reading) but it doesn't have to be difficult to pay back Grin

did he use the electricity?

this says what they can charge for if they have not billed you over a period of time - I would quote it at them.

Thank you all for replying, carol, that PDF was great.

I'm drafting a letter of complaint, as they never did respond to complaint re-direct debit guarantee so therefore can't back-bill us 16months later.

Thank you x
