Worried regarding tax credits.

I done my renewal yesterday after an hour on hold Angry

My payments have been stopped because they never updated my address but that's a whole other rant.

I was on maternity leave last year and stupidly assumed that it wouldnt matter.

They informed me that they deduct £100 from my total income for every week I was on maternity leave meaning £3900 has been deducted from my total income of £7000.

I am now worried sick that I have been overpaid and will need to pay a significant amount back to them. The person on the phone couldn't tell me and said I'd just need to wait and see what the final decision was.

I put the lower figures into the calculator and it said I wasn't entitled to anything at all Hmm

Has anyone else been in this situation?

I was under the impression the less you earned the more tax credits were awarded but it doesn't seem to be the case.

I'm quite worried now.

Why are they deducting from your pay??

You may wake up one day and have a sum from them in your account that's what has happened to me! X

If someone recieves statutory maternity pay, £100 of it is not counted as income. The amount I earned wasn't right and I had no idea it didn't count as income or I would have called them as soon as I went on maternity leave.

I have also had a backdated amount from them the past couple of years but this time I'm worried it's going the other way and I'll be due them a lot of money.

I'm just going to have to wait and see and try and not worry for the next few weeks

Deducting £3900 off your annual income should mean that you're entitled to more, not less, tax credits, surely?
Hope its sorted soon.

I was on maternity in the last tax year too

Deducting the money from mat pay made them owe me £100

Aslong as you work enough hours why would you not be entitled that makes no sense to me, tc is there to help those on a low income

Have you tried putting your figures into a calculator like this one? I find the one on the actual tax credits website confusing because it only shoes your entitlement from the following Monday through until the end of the year. I cannot understand though, if your income has reduced, why your tax credits would go down.

You have it the wrong way round, you should get more tc not less Smile

miracle0812 · 26/07/2014 13:25

I think you will be given a rebate as you should get more I got one after being on Maternity Allowance x

Thanks everyone, hope it goes in my favour Smile

I'm going on maternity in a few weeks, when I spoke to tax credits they other day to do my renewal they said that I don't have to contact them to let them know once I go onto smp and to just call once baby is born!

Why is £100 of it not counted as income? Does that mean you don't get your working tax credits while on maternity and only your child tax?

I'm going to call and let them know as soon as my smp starts
