Tax credits overpayment - how have you repaid?

Got the letter today. Grrr! And although provisional, I think it's right. Spent the whole of last tax year on 5 week contracts so didn't let them know as I could have been out of work within a week at any given point.

Anyone had to pay back? And if so how/how much per month?

Thanks!

Paying £11 a week for a £5k overpayment. They do let you spread a maximum of 10 years

We've just had ours through aswell. Just over £2k to repay & they are taking £17 per week.

It does say that we could phone them & ask to spread it over a longer time though - which we might yet do!

5k to pay £40 a month.
Reality how on earth did you get it that low, the woman I spoke to was beyond vile and had me in absolute tears and said that was the lowest they'd take.

Blimey! That makes me feel better, thanks! I've been feeling sick all day about the prospect of having to cough up a few extra hundred a month. Do you have to negotiate repayment with them or do they suggest a figure to start with?

You need all your in comings and outgoings, work everything out, including saving for car tax, maintenance monthly, insurances etc etc. Whatever's left they take. If it's below a threshold they transfer you to another department to ok it.
At least that's what they did for me

MiaSparrow · 25/07/2014 13:37

Thanks. I wonder what they'll do with us then as we're both self-employed. (Hence the trouble working it all out in the first place.) Luckily (or not) we're in London paying extortionate rent so I'm not sure we have any "spare" cash anyway.

Ps. Is it all done on a form? Or over the phone? Questions, questions... Sorry!

Big income and outgoings check. Some severe grovelling
the maximum term to pay it off over is 10 years.
