Hi so I am selling a pram and the person wants to pay via PayPal. Is it safe to accept money via this and can the perso. Request money from there rather than pay in? (Hope that makes sense) (have never used it to accept money)

I think there are fees to pay for using paypal so check that out first. You could ask if they can do a bank transfer instead

ilovepowerhoop · 23/07/2014 09:44

www.paypal.com/uk/webapps/mpp/paypal-fees - looks like it depends how the payment is funded

hoobypickypicky · 23/07/2014 09:46

Do you know the buyer?

Are they collecting in person?

The appropriate answer is dependent on your response to those questions. PP may not be a wise means of payment at all.

I don't know the buyer. That's why I'm hesitant. They are saying that they will send a courier to pick it up. But have asked for PayPal first to make transfer. I dunno sounds dodgy to me?

I wouldn't! They are arranging their own courier, so you have no proof of delivery/tracking. This means they can claim the item wasnt received, & PayPal do usually side with buyers, & refund.

Iloveweetos · 23/07/2014 09:55

Ok I will ignore! I knew something wasn't right!

Tell them it's cash on collection ONLY. No ifs, buts or sob stories.

The two common scams are buyers collecting the item having paid by PP and then going home and putting in an "item not received" claim. You've no proof that they have the pram. A signed receipt from the buyer won't be accepted, only proof of delivery from a recognised shipping company (Royal Mail, MyHermes, UPS, DHL, ParcelForce etc) is considered proof. Due to having no proof PP will find in the buyers favour and refund them the cost of the pram they "didn't receive". You end up with no money and no pram.

Don't let the buyer arrange their own courier because they, not you, are the only people with access to the tracking and delivery details. If they say they haven't received the item and claim a refund you have no proof otherwise.

The other scam is where a buyer pays by PP, gets a friend to collect and then obtains a reversal of funds from PP on the grounds that they "didn't authorise the payment".

Keep it simple. No cash - no sale.

Paypal is wonderful if used correctly.
If the goods are posted by the seller with a trackable number then its fine.
If the goods are collected of delivered avoid paypal at all costs.
Cash on collection ALWAYS for big things.
