Oh no! Car park prang- and insurance quandary

I got caught speeding about a year and a half ago. 3pts, £60 fine.

Forgot about it when insurance was auto renewed. Remembered the other day, but just thought oh well, I'm sure I won't have a prang; haven't had one for years! Famous last words (of course)!

Just backed into a car in the car park who was backing out at right angle to me. My bumper went into their rear door.

My car is fine; theirs is not. Shouldn't be too expensive I hope; but I don't really want to claim on the insurance because of the above.

What are the insurers likely to do if the claim does go through them? Am I going to be hung out to dry????? Very nervous and worried-any experiences of similar would help

They may say you're not covered.

A friend of mine had this. 3 points on her licence for speeding. Forgot to tell them. Then her car caught fire due to a electrical fault. Insurance company refused to pay out.

She didnt get done for not having insurance though. So if you're happy to pay the repairs yourself it shouldn't matter.

specialsubject · 21/07/2014 17:10

surprised they didn't notice.

you may well not be covered for this. All incidents need to be declared. The best course (and the least stressful one) is to phone your insurers, plead a mistake and throw yourselves on their mercy. To do otherwise will come back on you.

good luck. And I assure you no need for one of those outfits with arrows on...

I forgot to declare points for 2.5 years (insurance auto renewed). When I realised (no accident, just realised) and called them they charged me the difference for the last 2 years insurance £150ish, otherwise I would have been driving without valid insurance and they could report me for that Shock

In your circumstances I would phone the insurance and declare the points, and inform them of the accident and ask for advice. Might be you have to pay for the accident privately, just need to hope its not too expensive!

TiredOfSleep · 22/07/2014 09:54

The thing is it's up to the other party if they are prepared to go privately. I've had issues in the past and even if it ends up being mor expensive I'd usually prefer to go through insurance somy might not have a choice.

WeAllHaveWings · 22/07/2014 17:03

when I said it might be op will need to pay for the accident privately, I meant because her insurance is invalid due to undeclared points and wont cover it!

Squeegle · 22/07/2014 20:01

Thanks for your advice! The other party has given me a quote from the garage £375. Bad but not as bad as it could have been. I am inclined to pay it and then just let insurance co know about the points in case if another issue! What a pain!

sounds like a plan. But tell the insurers tomorrow, you are not covered at the moment and could be said to be knowingly driving uninsured.

Squeegle · 22/07/2014 21:47

Yes indeedie. I will do, who knows what will be next.
