Family and Kid Suitcases

We're just about to set off on a holiday abroad in a couple of weeks but first we've been needing to sort out a decent family suitcase for us all - 2 kids and 2 adults. Does anyone know/used any good suitcase brands? i'm a bit worried about buying something only for it to all fall to pieces the minute we get off the plane :)

www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/9139037.htm#pdpProductReviews - we have used cases like these the last couple of times

Get thee to John Lewis and explore the vast and eye-wateringly expensive array of Samsonite rigid shell suitcases. I've had one since 1985, it's been round the world more times than I have (and that's saying a lot) and I'll probably end up passing it onto my grandchildren. The John Lewis brand rigid cases are also very good and a little less expensive.

Get a smaller case each : the ones with wheels are great because then the kids pull their own along and each person packs into their own bag

we travel a lot
we each have a "cabin" bag and a "hold" bag
and can run full tilt through an airport when the gates change because we are each in charge of our own stuff

the kids got their own bags when they were 7 and 5 BTW

and YYY to John Lewis
something like this
www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-greenwich-2-wheel-75cm-suitcase-graphite/p712081?colour=Graphite will last you years, the wheels are protected
AND it is light so does not use up your baggage allowance

I had a samsonite from when my dad travelled before having me and he is 70 now! I changed it to a modern samsonite a few years back as the new ones are easier to pull (sideways not longways). So I'm partial to them.

I need another one now as we have only a small and medium check in cases. That was enough for two adults and a 2yo. We will be 2 adults and a nearly 4yo and infant next year so we will need another small case.

Will have a look at the john Lewis ones. Thanks. Good to hear they are good and a bit cheaper.

Get one with 4 wheels much much easier to pull. And ideally if you have two small children get them so the smaller case can stack on top of the larger whilst you pull just the larger.

TalkinPeace · 19/07/2014 14:00

The trouble with the four wheel ones is that the case itself is heavier - so takes up a chunk of your allowance before yo pack anything
and I've seen SO many of them with damaged wheels on airport carousels as the wheel is very vulnerable during loading
UNLESS you get really sturdy (read - heavy) ones

That's interesting Peace. Between us we have 9 4 wheeled suitcases Blush but touchwood we have never had a problem and I've never seen one damaged. As for weight, the mid size ones empty weigh 3kg and generally fill to about 15/ 18kg. Tbh we usually fly scheduled so it might be less of a problem?

I agree about getting one with 4 wheels, we have 2 with 4 wheels and 2 with2 wheels the kids much prefer the 4 wheeled ones as you can just slide them along on the 4 wheels, easier to turn etc.

FreeLikeABird · 20/07/2014 19:31

There not all heavy, get the lightweight ones.
