For the past 6 years we have been paying off our debts that were run up when DP (now hubby) lost his job, the car when bang and I was at uni 8 months pregnant. The Debt its self is one loan, one over draft and one credit card which total under £6300.
I all but the over draft are in his name (the over draft was joint). we have always paid some thing back even it was only £1 each when on JSA. We have not run up any more debt in 5,1/2. However only we can afford to pay them off anytime soon, currently it works out at 20+ years. I cant go that long with it hanging over us. So I have been thinking about a DRO for him to clear it.

if applies for a DRO what will happen?

will they come to our home and check assets?

will they try to chase me for the money as we are now married?

will our joint bank account get frozen (it has no debt on it)?

I was witness to a very bad bankruptcy as a kid which ended my parents marriage and left my dad debt free but mum over her head in his bills and debt and frozen account for months, so I am very weary of any of it. However having this over us for the next 20+ is to much too.

I went bankrupt a couple of years back, so not a DRO but the rules are similar.

They definitely won't come to your house to check any assets. I think you can't have assets over £300 (or £1000 for a car) for a DRO - this is the secondhand value though. They are not interested in any household goods or things you need for everyday life.

They will chase you for any joint debts, the overdraft will not be written off as you'd be expected to pay it.

My 'normal' bank account was frozen, but I was easily able to get a Co-op basic account, which is just the same as a normal account (allows internet banking and direct debits but not cheques or overdrafts.) It's likely your joint account would get frozen, but in any case it would be better for your credit rating not to have joint finances while your DP is insolvent.

I can recommend Step Change for telephone advice on debt, they were really helpful for me.
