Income tax rebate

Does anyone know how I'd go about claiming a tax rebate?

I think I earned below the threshold last year, but I have no idea how to get the money back, it was in several different jobs as well.

Tax seems so complicated.

Were you employed and not self employed?

You should have received your p60 by now from your employer that you were with at 5th April 2014. On this it will show pay and income tax totals for year for previous employment, current employment and your overall total.

If your total earnings were less than £9440 you should not have had to pay any tax.

Each time you changed jobs were you given a P45? You should have got a copy of each of these to keep so put them in date order and add them up to make sure they total what is on your P60.

If you have paid tax then you would be eligible to claim this back (National Insurance can't be claimed back and has a lower threshold for being paid)

If you have been then you need to contact your local tax office and they should be able to put you through to the correct tax office to reclaim anything you overpaid.

Go on the HMRC website, there's a form you can fill in there. You'll need all your P60/P45 forms for the year as proof of income, but they pay fairly quickly IME (I used to have several summer jobs as a student)

Oh ok, no I don't have the P60s or P45s for any of the jobs, but I do have some old payslips.

call them up and ask them, but my guess is that you need to fill in a tax return.

Onesleeptillwembley · 22/05/2014 23:04

Of course you don't have to fill in a tax return! Wait till you get your p60 from your employer then look at the figures. If you have paid too much, or think you have, then ring up. They will then tell you to send in your p60.

My income last year was made up of about two thirds employment and one third self employment. My employment was taxed at source. Knowing that about the first 10K is tax free, and that I'd therefore paid too much tax, I filled it all out in a tax return and got the rebate pretty-much instantly.

You need your p45s and p60 from your current employer. If you have lost these things you will have to request a statement of earnings for the year.

Can you phone the tax office and request a statement of earnings?

Why can they issue you with a statement of earnings that you then have to give back to them? Why not just keep it and give you back your tax?

Your employers, past and present provide a stat. Of earnings.

Hmrc has a copy of p45 & p60s and are working through them but it takes a while. If you leave it to them you'll get a rebate in a few years.

Onesleeptillwembley · 24/05/2014 13:25

The return was because you were self employed Libra.
