To ask for help re income support

Posted here for traffic as I am quite anxious . I have also name changed. Could I ask a favour if anyone claims both income support and tax credits could they please look at their award notice for me. I need to know if under the section for any other income it mentions tax credits.
I have just noticed our award doesn't mention our tax credits although we did tell the income support department we were in receipt of tax credits when we made our claim. We have never claimed income support before so I am a bit clueless and worried we may have accidentally been committing benefit fraud for the last two months. Thank you

You are entitled to child tax credits if you are in receipt of income support.
I am not on IS anymore so don't have am awards notice anymore but the IS part was for me and the tax credits were for children's part.

Thanks I thought we were ok to get child tax credits. However what I am worried about is the working tax run on ( for childcare) that why I need to know what the actual award notice says.

Tax credits make a real mess with I run on, in my opinion!! I suggest heading to job centre or local children's centre to see if they can help. Tax credit will inform DWP when tax credits stop but it can be very confusing & leave families short Thanks

youmakemydreams · 15/05/2014 22:19

My friend was told today her working tax credits will run on for 28 days from the date of her benefit claim.

littlemisssarcastic · 15/05/2014 22:58

The working tax credit run on is a bloody nightmare imo.
If you are receiving the same or more in working tax credit than you would be entitled to from income support, you probably won't actually be entitled to any income support. This is because income support is calculated on what the law says you need to live on, means tested, and WTC is counted as income.
By all means, claim income support but it's highly unlikely that you'll get income support and WTC at the same time.
Also make sure if you are receiving a WTC run on but are not working anymore, you will need to inform council tax support and housing benefit because those can change too.

IfISpellItWrongIsThatOk · 15/05/2014 23:07

The problem is we did tell them about tax credits because we thought we would still get wtc for childcare whilst we were calming income support( my dh is on parental leave and going back to work in July) but it's not showing as income on our income support award notice. Then I found out you only get wtc for childcare during paternity leave not parental leave.
The wtc run on is to pay childcare only we didn't get any other wtc. I only found out today when we got an award notice that we were even getting a run on.

Posted too soon. I am worried to income support will claim we didn't tell them about the wtc when we did . Also if it's for childcare is that classed as money to live on? Would really like to know if it normally shows on award notice. Don't the tax credits and income support communicate with each other?

Why not just call them and ask?

IfISpellItWrongIsThatOk · 16/05/2014 20:18

Because I would rather now if they have overpayed us before I speak to them so I can get legal advice.

OP posts:
littlemisssarcastic · 16/05/2014 23:51

Could you ring them to find out, then seek legal advice if you need it?

It can't be pleasant to be worrying about something that might not even be an issue?

Canthisonebeused · 17/05/2014 00:00

Usually the job centre inform tax credits if you are claiming IS. Isn't child care element for working tax credits and not child tax credits. I think you need to inform tax credits you are claiming IS. You should get basic element of tax credits which is 200 and something per month and IS as an income is not taken into account as such.

Canthisonebeused · 17/05/2014 00:03

Sorry I miss read your post re working tax credits. you do get 4 weeks of payment from ending tax credits claim though OP so if it's been less than four weeks call them just to check.

shouldbeelsewhere · 17/05/2014 00:08

OP does this help at all? www.adviceguide.org.uk/england/benefits_e/benefits_help_if_on_a_low_income_ew/help_for_people_on_a_low_income_-_income_support.htm there are also pages on there about tax credits.

grocklebox · 17/05/2014 00:14
