Receipts and tax self assessment

I hope someone can help!

I have a rental property and have to do a self assessment tax return.

This year we had all the windows replaced. I paid the agreed price by bank transfer in December, on the understanding that he would return to do a tiny snagging issue and give me a receipt. Builder has now gone AWOL - wont respond to calls, texts or emails asking for the receipt and for him to complete the job Angry

Does anyone know if this will cause an issue on my tax return should I be asked to show proof or will the bank transfer on my statement be sufficient? Should I report it to the tax people?

TIA

I would just make a note of why the receipt is missing and include it as usual, it would only be an issue if you were audited anyway and you have some evidence of the payment, ie the bank statement.

But I would make a note and put it with your other receipts just in case it's a few years down the line when you are asked about it and you've forgotten!

Thanks Giraffaki.
I was just concerned that law of sod would make this the year I was audited!
I will make a note and do a print of my bank statement just in case. Fx they don't audit!

Keep all emails that have been sent as proof you have tried asking for a receipt.

The tax man wont just accept the bank transfer as that could of been for anything. Theres no proof it was for windows at that property.

He will accept copies of all emails sent.

I would keep a copy of bank statement, chasing emails etc on file to produce for HMRC if necessary. It sounds as though you've done all you can. Did he supply you with any guarantees for the windows? I thought they generally come with a 10 year guarantee but fingers crossed you won't need it.
Did you transfer the money into a business account? Just wondering if the builder even declared the income for tax and vat purposes. His problem though, not yours. Sounds as though you did everything you could reasonably be expected to do.

The bank transfer is in his name & I have printed the email I sent following up the numerous calls & texts which I will also keep/ record the times of.

No paperwork at all Sad I was a right idiot - I'm normally quite savvy but for some reason didn't think it'd be an issue to get a receipt for completed work. I smell a tax-dodging rat.
