Tax credits claim check?

Hi, I'm hoping someone can give me some advice.
I've received a letter today from HMRC requesting additional information about the amount I claim for childcare.
Any ideas why I've been asked? Do they choose random people or has someone reported me?
I'm quite confident in that I've only ever given them the correct figures, but I'm still worried!

Apparently its random but they check loads of claims. I work in a nursery and this time of year theres always people asking for prooof to send in. I've just had the same letter, I've had to do it for the past 4 years.

Thank you, that's made me feel loads better.
Im as certain as I can be that my claim is accurate, but the letter sounds very accusatory. It says 'we think your payments might be wrong'

Dont worry, if you gave them the right information it'll be fine.

HELP!! I've renewed my tax credits.. For the year 12/13 I earned 5880, this year it's dropped because I was on Mat leave and was claiming smp my income for this year (2014) is 1650 does this mean i owe them money or they owe me? I renewed a week ago I'm just waiting for my rewards notice but wanted some advice in the mean time?!

kimlo · 06/05/2014 18:12

When I was on maternity leave and I told them when I renewed they didnt count the first bit and because my income had dropped they owed me money. They gave it to me in o e go which was useful.

dont worry about it, I dint think you could owe them money.

kimlo · 06/05/2014 18:14

And I got enhanced maternity pay so I didnt earn that much less really because I was on 6 months full pay, but because that included smp they dissregard some of it I just cant remember how much it was.

Don't they pay you on your last years earnings.
I have found out that we are unlikely to receive any next year due to income, but they said we would still receive it as it would be this years money paid next iyswim.

I've had a couple of these due to a mix up with my NI number (not my fault) which made it look like I was earning 40k more than I declared. I just sent the info they asked for and it was fine.

They do random checks but as long as you have them the correct details when you made the claim it should be fine.

Thanks kimlo I hope so! And last years earnings was down from 13/14 I earned 1650 but the year before 12/13 earned 5880 so they should go by year 13/14? Shouldn't they?
