Im seriously considering a DRO and wondered who is best to go through.

I've see there are lots of approved agencies but have no idea how to choose.

Any help would be appreciated

Have you consulted one of the free debt advisory services already?

WinterLover · 21/04/2014 08:17

I've spoken to step change and they advised token payments.

We have (in my name) just under 11k in debt.

My wages and any benefit top up just covers bills and £40 per month towards the debts.

Im now pregnant and DP still desperately trying to find a job (he was let go due to health problems) we already have a DS and DSD comes at weekends.

We've been in this position for 18months now and I seriously can't see anyway out of it.

All jobs in our town are at minimum wage so we will never have a fantastic income

If your DP has health problems can he not claim any form of benefits ?

Catmint · 21/04/2014 09:22

Any Authorised Intermediary ( an adviser who is qualified to do DROs) has to be trained to a high standard, no matter which Competent Authority ( agency which can do DROs) they work for. They have to do extra training and be a member of the institute of money advisers so they can be always up to date with the latest info.

The DRO unit at the Insolvency Service checks DRO applications as well, and will decline any that they think there is a problem with, although this is not frequent.

The main issue with a DRO from an adviser's point of view is that every single debt must be fully disclosed, otherwise the client is put in a difficult position with any creditor that may have been left off. Obviously, the client has to take responsibility for disclosing all debts, and will sign the application.

I'm not an adviser so I don't know what the impact on you may be if you get a DRO, but the Authorised Intermediary should go through this with you in detail before making the application.

Good luck.

If you went to a generalist advice agency such as CAB they could also look at Income Maximisation through benefits and other options on addition to arranging a DRO.

Not all CAB can do DROs though so do check.

Augustwedding · 21/04/2014 09:27

Go to the CAB. They have the trained advisors that do DRO abn they do not charge. The DRO is £90 and you have to pay for that .

WinterLover · 21/04/2014 09:37

He did claim Esa but it caused so many problems (they kept putting it on hold for more information but never requested more information from us).

Will try to get an appointment with CAB.

My credit rating is shot anyway but will look into the implications of it too.

Thankyou

Go to the CAB. They did mine for me & were brilliant. Was amazed at how easy it was. The relief when I walked out of there was unreal.

WinterLover · 21/04/2014 09:47

thanks pickled im not sleeping stressing over money.

I really didn't expect to be in this mess, but between DP and I we've had 4 redundancies in 4 years in a town where companies are going into administration.

OP posts:
pickledparsnip · 21/04/2014 09:47

You will have a crappy credit rating for 6 years. In my case I didn't care. After my ex went, there just simply wasn't any money left after rent/bills/food to pay any of the debts he had helped run up. The CAB go though all the options with you. I could have paid back all my creditors £1 a week, but it would have taken 20 years, and my credit rating would still have been shot.

You can find details of your local CAB and lots of other info on Adviceguide.
