Sick pay - Is this pregnancy related sickness?

Hi

I am currently being treated for an ectopic pregnancy and signed off work sick by a doctor at the hospital.

I have just been paid and I have been unpaid for 3 days. I wasn't expecting this and now I am not so sure if I think I should have got paid for this time off or not. My contract says I only get paid from 4th day of absence which is what has happened, however our staff handbook says all pregnancy related time off for appointments and sickness is paid. Nothing is mentioned about loss of pregnancy. During the 3 days I was still pregnant but undergoing tests etc to see if it would resolve itself or if I needed treatment as it can be life threatening if left to continue too long.

Would you have expected to be paid in this situation if those were your employers rules? Not sure if I should challenge it or not Confused

Is all pregnancy related absence paid at your full salary, or is it paid in line with your normal absence policy? It would be very unusual for pregnancy related absences to be paid at a higher rate than any other sickness, I would have taken it to mean that they are confirming you will be paid for time off for appointments etc.

The absence will be classed as pregnancy related, however I honestly think you may have misread the policy.

I'm sorry for your loss Thanks

Thanks rockchick

Yes all pregnancy related sick is paid straight away at full salary, you don't have to wait until the 4th day like you do otherwise. For example me and a colleague were both off with a UTI within a few weeks of each other last year. I didn't get paid but she did as she was pregnant and it could have been harmful to her baby. It's quite a nice policy actually and they're very supportive but for some reason they don't want to pay for this

In that case then yes, you should have been paid :)
