I live in a 3 bed semi and have just received a colossal bill for my electricity - over £1200! Wonder if anyone would mind saying how much they pay for gas and electric combined per month/quarter as I'm in dispute with elec company and my landlord over this, who say we should budget £105 per month! We don't have any gas to our house but all input would be gratefully received as I have to 'prove' it shouldn't cost this much!

Many thanks!

TBH when we had electric only in a two bed flat before price hikes we would fork out £250 a quarter odd. Now with combined gas and electric we probably pay over £300. So sorry but 105 for a three bed dosen't sound that outlandish - have you looked on the websites which tell you if you could save money?

LIZS · 04/08/2006 21:55

Do you pay by dd based on estimates? Is this an accumulated arrears or a reading for the past 3 months. Have you lived there a full year to have got an accurate feel for how much you use ? Remember when we had electric heating, water and cooking it cost us what seemed like a fortune and that was almost 20yrs ago.

goldendelicious · 04/08/2006 22:31

we have been paying £40 per month as we were told this should cover everything, the bill is for a nine month period as we only got the bill when we changed supplier - never even had a statement or anything before this. So the £1200 bill should really be £1500 for 9 months.

(Sorry should also add we only use two of the three bedrooms, one is empty, and we're not in all week as we work. We have an Economy 10 system which gives us 10 hours at cheap rate day/night which is when I do all my washing etc.)

I'm assuming that you've checked the readings?

goldendelicious · 04/08/2006 22:36

yes we've checked the readings and they're in line with the ones on the bill

We pay ridiculous amounts too but unfortunately I think it's correct. Our first quarterly bill in this house was 340 quid!! It's a 3 bedroom Victorian villa which had electric storage heating and was very poorly insulated. Also, I was on maternity leave so you obviously tend to use more. We started off with a direct debit of 90pound per month but that's recently been upped to 175 for the next 6 months as it wasn't enough . If you still think there is no rational explanation for it you can ask to have the meter tested but some companies might charge you for this and it may be correct anyway. If it is correct then your best bet is probably to look in to swapping companies, proper insulation (e.g. loft) and other energy efficient measures (e.g. energy saving light bulbs). Sorry, you probably know this already but just wanted to say I have every sympathy!! Good luck and here's hoping it's wrong!

We pay £27.00 per month electric
£30.50 gas per month for gas. No central heating yet. But do have tumble drier, large fridge and freezer washing machine. (3 bed semi)

greenranger · 05/08/2006 22:41

We pay £55 per month combined gas & electric, DD, so in the winter its under and summer over, not been here a year yet but should break about even, fingers crossed. We have a 3 bed terraced 1930's house now. Insulation in loft is on my list to do before winter!!!
Previous house was a 2 bed and was on economy 7, we paid about £50 ish.
£1500 for 9 months is around £160 per month, does seems a bit high.
Look to change supplier, have you tried www.moneysavingexpert.com loads of great tips for money saving including utilities.
The constant hike in utility prices is an ongoing stuggle for us too, I wish you all the best

lizziemun · 06/08/2006 08:01

We are in a 4 bed detatched and we only pay £85.00 per month for electricty (my dh is a it consultant so we have lots of computers, servers running all the time) and £47.00 per month for gas which is heating, water and cooking

I know price have risen by loads this year.

i would suggest that you ask the supplier to check the meter in case it not working probaly as this does seem to be very high.

Pixiefish · 06/08/2006 08:07

I live ina 3 bed house and pay £75 gas and £55 electricity. Nightmare I know but it could be right

Panyanpickle77 · 06/08/2006 08:40

gas and electric is 119 pcm for us. We have a 3 bed semi, but I'm a sod for using my tumble dryer!

goldendelicious · 07/08/2006 21:14

Thanks so much everyone for your help on this, seems it differs a lot between households. It transpires that the company we were with had us on an Economy 7 tariff, not an Economy 10 tariff. Their fault as they fit an economy 10 meter for us but put us on wrong tariff. So what we thought were the economy hours were actually peak hours, all my washing, tumble drying and central heating has cost me a fortune

OP posts:
Kathlean · 07/08/2006 21:18

Have they admitted that to you? Wow tell them to work out how much it would have been under the right tarriff and deduct the balance. IT is THEIR mistake. Tell them you will go to the regulators if they don't agree to do so (-:

goldendelicious · 07/08/2006 21:58

They've frozen our account for now while it gets sorted so they must feel they're to blame, but not actually said so! Still taking my meter readings, got dh on it every evening now!!

Have a look at this website
www.energy-ombudsman.org.uk/
Apparently a lot of energy companys are being investigated for overcharging people, and overestimating fuel usage!

goldendelicious · 07/08/2006 22:59

thanks mrsaek i'll have a look

OP posts:
goldendelicious · 07/08/2006 23:04

looks promising, by the sounds of it i will have to wait till i've heard from my supplier first and come to some sort of agreement with them, but if I don't agree can ask them to help sort it out.
