Does this sound dodgy to you ??

Dp has gone for an interview.
On the job ad it didn't say that it was an agency, but we disciovered this when he rang to apply .

I was annoyed cos I hate it when they don't say it's an agency and have heard bad things about agencies paying you less than if you got the job through the company.

Anyway, he's there now and has just rung saying he needs his bank details. I gave him his accont number but there is no sort code on his card. I am assuming this is because it's a very basic account, but anyway why the hell do they need his bank details now. He asked she said cos if you get the job we'll need to pay you.
Well yeah I agree but I don't like the idea of his bank details sitting in their office when he might not even get the job.

It's a new agency too which is also putting me off.

Am I just being paranoid ?

Also, the job is advertised as paying £7.25 an hour, but will he actually get this or do the agency take a cut ?

NomDePlume · 03/08/2006 13:54

I'd be suspicious of giving my bank details so early on in proceedings.

FWIW though re pay, I've always earned MORE per hour through agency work than I would have done if I'd have been recruited directly by the company.

NomDePlume · 03/08/2006 13:55

He will get the full amount advertised. The agency will have already agreed a seperate fee with the company.

KristinaM · 03/08/2006 13:56

I have never been asked for bank details until i got the job. I would be suspicious too

nutcracker · 03/08/2006 13:56

Hmm right ok.

Well they are saying he must have a sort code,, well sorry but he hasn't and so they haven't actually got all his details now so tough.

Oh well will see what happens next. Feel like I should have sent him with a list of questions now LOL

He needs this job so badly for many reasons so fingers crossed.

OP posts:
nutcracker · 03/08/2006 13:57

Mind you they'd be dissapouited if they got into his account cos it's empty.

NomDePlume · 03/08/2006 13:57

He will have a sort code, every bank branch will have one (it is not specific to his account, there will be one sort code for the whole branch).

Quootiepie · 03/08/2006 13:58

sounds ok to me... what agency? I had to give my bank details, and he'll get the pay they advertise.

NotQuiteCockney · 03/08/2006 13:58

This does sound ok to me, and I'm pretty twitchy.

It's all fine as long as they're not asking him to authorise any payment to them.

Bank details aren't actually secret - anyone who you ever pay by cheque has your bank details, they're on the bottom of every cheque.

And yes, he'll get £7.25, well, that less appropriate taxes, the agency would normally take their cut from the company, iyswim.

nutcracker · 03/08/2006 13:58

Sorry can I ask another question ?

If the interview is with the agency, what happens next ?? Do they send him for an interview with the company or what ??

Who decides if he gets the job ??

OP posts:
nutcracker · 03/08/2006 13:59

Don't know the name of the agency, just know that they are new.

I am permanently twitchy at the mo so it's probably me being paranoid.

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 03/08/2006 14:06
  1. Get the name of the agency and google it. If possible, get names of the head people at the agency and google them.
  1. Is it a permie job? Or temp? I think at this kind of pay rate, you just interview with the agency.

  2. The only real risk to using a new agency is, the agency can go out of business and your DP ends up out whatever pay is owing, iyswim.

nutcracker · 03/08/2006 14:08

Thanks NQC, will find all that out.

The job is temp for 13 weeks with a view to making it permanent for the right candidate.

Am so nervy about it.It's for a factory job which dp has 23 years experiance of, but I just keep thinking he stands no chance with his back prob and his age but I am being pesamistic I know.

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 03/08/2006 14:27

Def no interview with the client, then. He'll start at the factory, and see. If he becomes permanent, the client will have to pay a set fee to the agency, and then he'll be employed directly by the client.

NotQuiteCockney · 03/08/2006 14:29

Those things might not matter that much to them?

I don't think asking for bank details is at all dodgy. And I speak as someone who has a pretty good eye for scams. (My folks were drawn into about a billion of them .)

I did used to do agency clerical work, back home. Oh, and my professional jobs here were all via agencies, too.

prozacmighthelp · 03/08/2006 14:30

His sort code will be at the bottom of his cheques in the cheque book

nutcracker · 03/08/2006 14:32

Thanks everyone.

Prozacmighthelp - He doesn't have a cheque book because it is a very very basic account.

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 03/08/2006 14:36

Call the branch, they'll tell you the sort code. It is by branch.

There doesn't seem to be an online tool to look them up, at least not one that's free. But your bank may tell you on the sort code.

(I have a no-cheques account, but I think it has the sort code on the card - it's a six digit number, if this helps. You probably already knew that, though.)

nutcracker · 03/08/2006 14:39

Yeah it's definatly not on the card. It's a cash card, he can withdraw cash with it and thats it.

Oh well as long as he can find out thats all that matters.

Wish he'd hury up back now so I can grill him

OP posts:
julienetmum · 03/08/2006 14:46

I don't know what bank your dh banks with but I am with NatWest and they have stopped putting sort codes and account numbers on all their cards. The number on my card is just a switch number with no relevance to my bank account number.

If he hasn't got a chequebook the sort code and account number will be on his statements.

I don't think it sounds dodgy really. It can take some time to sort things like this out when a person gets the job so I assume they are just making sure they have everything ready if he does get the job, or agencies often (once they have interviewed someone once then put them forward for something else. (This happened to me when I got down to the last few for a job recruited though an agency.) the agency rang me to say they really liked me and wanted to put me forward for other stuff but I had become pg by that time so wanted to sit it out as my existing job had better mat pay.

nutcracker · 03/08/2006 14:47

Ahh right, it's the Derbyshire biulding society but dp was mumbling about them being connected to Natwest so perhaps thats it.

OP posts:
nutcracker · 03/08/2006 17:50

Well he's back and it's a case of wait and see now.

The girl at the agency was very impressed with his experiance of factory work and so rang the employers there and then to tell them about him. Dp even had a quick chat with them himself.

The agency are emailing all of his details through to the company and she is going to ring them for feedback tommorow. She said the jobs been available for quite a while as they hadn't had anyone with enough experiance apply.

Fingers crossed.
