Can anyone help with overdraft for a second time student?
When I was a student at first I was ridiculous with money. I opened a student account and got (and spent) a £1800 overdraft. After uni I had a job but failed to pay off my overdraft. I'm now a student again (nursing) and I can't get a student account again with my current bank. I'm not sure if I can with another bank. The interest on my over draft adds up to about £40 a month and with this and other debts (£50pm for an overpayment of child tax credit last year) it leaves me with little money spare to pay off the od. I can't get a credit card as I'm a student.

I've posted this on the mse forum aswell but I'm not 100% sure how that works.

What do you mean by help? Advise you? Or give you money?

TroLoLo · 01/02/2014 12:28

Advise, I obviously wouldn't expect anyone to give me money.

You are only eligible for one student account with overdraft facilities, sorry.

I've done two degrees and was able to get another student account with my bank, the same bank I used during my first degree. I just contacted them and sent evidence of my student status. I also opened another student bank account with another bank during my second degree to take advantage of their interest free overdraft. Had to juggle with some payments into the account and send evidence but otherwise had no problems having two student accounts. I've known other students who have several student accounts to take advantage of the freebies/overdrafts, but it seemed a bit too complicated to open more than two.

As a mature student you may be eligible for 'free money' aka discretionary funds from your uni. I got over £1500 through the access to learning fund which was through my university student services. They explicity said they prioritised mature students with children (and I also have a disability which made my case stronger).

I will maybe try another bank. I just want to stop the interest and pay it off. I hate how stupid I was with money when I was 18/19! I do get a good bursary (nursing) but its not enough to pay bills and pay debt off while keeping the fridge full.
