Feeling ranty and shouty about car insurance

I contacted my car insurers today to advise them of my new address which is 3.95 miles away from my old address. It takes 12 minutes to drive it. I was charged £43.29 for changing my address (and a £12 administration fee). I had to pay because of “the ratio between the types of and number of claims between the different postcode areas”. Clearly in my new postcode area people are crashing their vehicles into each other, vandalising and stealing cars constantly. All this was going on just a 12 minute drive from me. What a fool I have been not to notice. They said if I wanted to cancel the insurance [‘cause they could tell I was somewhat aggrieved] that would cost me £50. AIBU in feeling I have been robbed? How can they justify that? I have written to customer services asking them to explain and justify it to me. When I took out the policy I’d felt the premium was very reasonable, making me think there were advantages after all in being considered of a “grown up” age and eligible to use this particular company. How wrong I was. Thank you for listening to my rant. I had to get it off my chest.

Postcodes matter when it comes to insurance. If you ever change job, you'll find some of those are deemed 'risky' when it comes to getting a car insured. It may only be four miles but if 'computer says no' then you're stymied. You can't carry on pretending you live at the old address or it'll come back to bite you if you make a claim. Driving ain't cheap...

insurers now charge for cancellation and address changes, because the market is so competitive - that's how they gave you a cheap price to start with. You are a bit stuck with them during the policy and they know it.

sadly you just have to suck it up, but no doubt you'll be getting quotes when renewal comes and taking your business elsewhere.

if it is any consolation I paid £26 admin to change cars!

I'm changing the car for a something more economical although at the moment a bike seems the best option but just not in this weather!! I will be charged £12 to transfer the policy to the new car. I will swerve this particular company when renewal comes around I think!
