Will online grocery shopping be suitable for pensioner trying to save money?

My mother - is not good with money - she is on a small fixed income and lives alone, she has no freezer or cooker - uses a halogen oven, toaster and microwave for her cooking needs.

She wants to save money and finds when she goes shopping she has a tendency to buy stuff she doesn't need on impulse (I know I do). So she asked yesterday if I could help her do online shopping. Possibly through Asda or Tesco's.

She has cut bread and milk intake down recently for health reasons. She has simple meals often involving vegetables and fish more rarely meat. She will be unlikely to order sufficient for the min order requirements more then once a month. So I am not sure how helpful that will be seeing as she will need to by fruit and veg still weekly. I live too far away (another country literally) to takeover shopping for her. I think she needs to make a list and take the cash for the purchases she needs and leave her cards behind when she goes shopping but if she is not going to do that - is doing a monthly shop for bulky items worth organising or will it make no difference?

Any MN tips for reducing impulse buying?

Does her local store offer click and collect as well as home delivery? If so I don't think there's a minimum spend for this, so she could order online and simply go and collect it instore.

Other than that, when I've been desperate to stick to budget I've planned the shop online so I know how much it will be, then printed the screen showing the basket and taken the cash with me (plus a few £ extra in case anything isn't in stock).

Good idea - I have just discovered the click and collect option on the Asda site (her preferred store so a combination of a monthly bulk shop and a weekly click and collect might work ...) I have to do all the online stuff so it has to be practical for me as well.
