Car insurance question

We have very kindly been given a car by our IL's. It's not suitable for our needs so we are going to be selling it on/trading it in asap (IL's know and are fine with this btw!).

We get the car on monday so need to sort out car insurance for then. Do we need to just go on the comparison sites, etc, find the best quote and buy an annual policy even though we'll be changing the car very soon? Will the insurers be ok if we phone up after a month or less and ask to change the insurance to whichever new car we get?

Or is it best to get a temporary policy then sort out insurance for when we get a new car from scratch?

Sorry if this is a daft question....we are new to being car owners and haven't had to deal with this before!

having just been through the pain of car changing with only one policy, I am now a nominated expert. :-)

temporary insurance can be very expensive. You can get quotes on the comparison engines for it. However if you don't have no claims it may well be the cheapest solution, for one driver.

many insurance companies charge for changes, mine was about £25. But if you have no-claims a year of a 'real' policy is probably cheaper assuming you will be buying another car. If you won't, and so will be cancelling totally, then check the costs of this before taking out a policy.

best bet is get quotes on the comparison sites, and then phone the selected company to check that your plans will work.

also remember that you must have continuous insurance and have the V5 in your name. If you don't insure the car it must a) be parked off road and b) have a SORN declaration.

Thanks for the advice! That gives us a starting point at least. I've been on a few sites so think we'll phone a couple of insurers this weekend and see what they say.

no worries. Also to remind (as you said you were new at this) that you need to make every effort to be thorough in what you declare on an insurance quote. Missing anything out can void your policy.

so accurate job description, accurate mileage estimate and correct main driver.
