ok so I work for an agency for most of my supply teaching ( a few days a month) now and again I work for the council as a supply teacher. last month I worked 3 1/2 days and have just received £19.36. Rang pay roll and they have looked back over previous wages for the year (council) they have deducted over !!£100!! .back in oct I changed the way I got paid from my agency work. I used to pay an umbrella company (key portfolio) an £8 margin fee then they took away deductions then I paid tax at a lower rate, since October I get paid on pay roll for agency work. the council lady has told me that I am on br for any council work I do as they received a p45 (or I did!)from key pay. how can they look back to april and take 20% of any earnings I have had from them!!? am confused

Your tax code of BR is cumulative.

So they apply it and it recalculates tax due inc. what showed on your P45 - all at 20%.
You can call and have it adjusted if you are no longer working for the council as your second job. It is now you only or main employment it seems whereas previously the umbrella co was your main employer.

They've applied the code correctly but your tax free allowance is still attached to the umbrella co by the sounds of it and needs switching over.

How many employers do you have now? Sounds like you may still have two. So one is using the 947L code and the other is using BR.

If you will not be earning over 9470 in the first job, then contact your local tax office and ask if you can have your tax code split between employers. They may or may not do that.
Come around May, HMRC will calculate that you have paid in taxes during 2013/14 tax year and if you have overpaid they will send you a refund cheque. So it sorts itself out over time but if your situation has completely changed it can be useful to let HMRC know and request tax coding adjustment.

In tax year April 2013 to March 2014 it looks like you have 3 employers. So not surprising that one or more are using BR tax code.

With RTI (payroll data submitted to HMRC monthly electronically) the idea is that HMRC should see faster when someone leaves a job. However did the umbrella company give you a P45?

yes cindy I had a p45. I only had 2 employers ; the council and the agency but 90 with agency. only had 3 wage packets since last april £00 ish, £70 ish and was expecting £150 this month nut only got £20 . they have taken the rest in tax !!

They have taken 20% of the total amount you have earned with them this year. Don't worry, you'll get it back next month if you get the code sorted asap. Call 0300 200 3300 and they'll get it sorted for you.

TheGirlFromIpanema · 23/01/2014 14:21

Aah, so you are still doing the agency work but its now run onpayroll rather than on SE basis?

Still same advice though - call the number above. They're pretty good and getting it sorted over the phone in one call for people!
