I've requested an activation code for this around once a week every week since early November, every time it doesn't arrive, after the second time I phoned up to check my address, my home address was right but correspondence address was my mums old house so I changed all my details and made them repeat back to me so I knew it was correct. At least 8 times since then I've gone through this charade on the phone asking them to check my address, correspondence address and contact details, every single time they say yep that's sorted now, and then it still doesn't arrive and I have to go through the whole rigmarole again.

There is nobody living at the old house now so I can't just go and pick up the post.

I do not owe any tax, in fact they owe me a rebate. I just spoke with someone this morning who said "oh no, your address says xx at xxxx street" and it's STILL wrong. I'm so frustrated, I've wasted so much time and money on the phone trying to get them to complete the simplest task.

This morning the woman on the phone said oh you should just have it sent by email, there is no option to do that on my HMRC log in, just a hyperlink which says "request a new code" and when you click it it says "you have requested a new code"". So frustrating they don't even know what their own system does.

I'm going out of the country on the 30th so need this to be sorted, have already written a complaint and raised it with my MP because they'll be bloody quick enough to fine me when it's late. So frustrating, three months of stress. I already had a six month fight with them to get the tax credits I was entitled to.

Has anyone else had a problem like this with HMRC and how did you sort it?

Me to. I have to pay capital gains on some shares - the amount included a deferred payment which only arrive late November. Still waiting for my UTR so I can go online and submit and pay prior to the 31st. Late payment fines of £100 for the first day and then £10 per day after that FFS. They say "its so easy to file and pay online". they don't say but it will take us nearly two months to give you the one thing you need to process.

Yes I requested an activation code - waited a week and then got an email saying they hadn't sent it as there was a problem with my address. What?! I've been living here nine years ... so a tortuous process of ringing them again and being passed from department to department to get the block on my address lifted so they could send me out another code. They really don't make this easy ... and I can see lots of people getting caught out thinking you can just go online and file the return - you don't factor in a wait of a week for an online code
