What happens to Tax credits when on sick leave?

I'm just trying to sort out some financial matters in prep for my husbands upcoming operation.

We currently receive both child tax and working tax credits-him being the only worker. He will be off work for between 4-6 months so I'm guessing his pay will be reduced and will get ssp(work are being very vague about his entitlement so this could be another thread!) Do we inform tax credits about his change in income? If so can anyone tell me how this would affect us? I'm terrified that it would make us worse off with him not working 40hours anymore? Tia

Child tax credits remain no matter what benefits you're entitled to & they make up most of the clim so try not to worry.

That's not quite accurate RedHelen

If he is receiving SSP you are still eligible for working tax credits for 28 weeks. If he's off longer than that it's likely your WTC would stop. See here

If your Dh's sick leave is 28 weeks or less (maximum you can get SSP), then he is still classed as working and nothing changes.

We had this in August when DP was off for a hernia op.

SSP also entitles you to HB/Council Tax reduction.

Personalclown-you can't get HB for a mortgage though can you? Sorry if I'm wrong. So just to confirm, would I ring tax cred as soon as he went on sick or wait until the review was due the following year?

Thanks ladiesSmile

Call them straight away and ask them to do an in-year assessment as you may be eligible for higher tax credits while he's only earning SSP.

You wouldn't get help with the mortgage, but you can speak to your lender and ask them if you could either have a payment holiday or switch to interest only for a few months to give you some breathing space.

We are already paying interest only on the mortgage so no help there but yes I will plea with them for a break, would be a huge help to us. Thanks everyone!

Rockchick - I meant child tax credits aren't determined by hours worked & you get them no matter what benefits you're on. They make yo the major part of any tax credit claim.
