Hi, a family member asked me this question and I didn't know the answer. Can someone advise please?

How many hours will she have to work to receive Child Tax Credit? or how much will she have to earn to receive it? she has just had her first child if that helps, she worked 37 hours before starting mat leave, but I think she wants to return part time when the time comes.
Thank you :-)

Single parent?

If so, 16 hours.

I think she gets child tax credit regardless of how many hours she works, if it is for working tax & childcare help then it has to be 16 hours.

I receive CTC and don't work for Working Tax Credits she would need to work over 16 hours

I think it's done on family income so if she's married she'll have to take DH's income into account too.

It is based on income. If they have one child and will be earning less than around £26k between them, they may get some help. If she goes back to work more than 16 hours a week they may be entitled to some help with childcare costs.

Point the family member in the direction of the benefits checker at www.turn2us.org.uk where they can run a few different numbers and see what it does to the outcome. Tax Credits are also explained here

You now have to work minimum 24 hrs a week to get working tax credit. You don't have to work to get child tax credit.

CogitoErgoSometimes · 03/01/2014 20:41

That's only true if it's a couple SolidGold

SolidGold · 03/01/2014 21:23

Oh sorry, didn't realise.

CogitoErgoSometimes · 03/01/2014 21:36

No problem... the person in question could be part of a couple quite easily :)
