income support and being overpaid...

This is a bit of a long story, so I hope you'll bear with me. It has got me really worried. As a single parent at university, I am entitled to income support over the summer. However, last year the student advice team mislead a lot of us to believe that we could now claim all year round, which led to a lot of us being overpaid. I realised the mistake and signed off in February. Now it is summer I can make another claim, but I am terrified they will claim back all that money, which will work out at over £1000. When I go in to reclaim, will they be able to tell I was overpaid if I don't mention it? I know this is a terrible thing to ask, but I really cannot afford to live at the moment, let alone pay back such a substantial sum of money. And if I do have to pay it back, will htey expect it all straight away? I am so angry as it looks like I am deliberately claiming money but it was honestly a mistake, and lots of us are now in the same boat any advice would be appreciated

Not sure if they'd be able to tell/pick up on the overpayment thing. But they definitely wouldn't make you pay it all back at once if you can't afford to. They will help you as much as you need with repayments and will only take what you can give them every week.
If you're claiming at the time the repayments will come out of your money directly.

hth good luck.
