Gift aid & self assessment tax return question

So, doing a self assessment tax return for the first time, and there's a did you give to charity box...

Pretty sure I ticked the gift aid box when sponsoring colleagues' charity exploits (marathons etc) at work, and also when paying for entry to museums - but - I didn't keep a record of these.

Am I supposed to declare that I've donated to charity and then say that I can't remember how much or to who? I suspect HMRC will want numbers....

The total amount donated will be less than the amount I pay in income tax. I'd remember if I'd donated as much as that!

If it's a relatively small amount e.g.

It only makes any difference if you are a higher rate tax payer. If not, don't bother with it. If you are a higher rate tax payer it means you get the rest of the tax relief on donations made as charities only claim basic rate relief directly.

BTW.... declaring your charity donations is really only of any benefit to you if you are a higher rate taxpayer. Then you'll get a rebate.

Ok, thanks.

I'm not a higher rate taxpayer, so looks like no need to worry about it then.

It also matters if you claim tax credits as it reduces your relevant income, but it sounds like the amounts involved are minimal so I wouldn't bother with it.
