Has anyone actually RECEIVED any money back after claiming their bank charges, yet????

I only started the process a few weeks ago (sent first letter as linked to from thread on here, asking Barclays for details of bank charges to which they have 40 days to reply).

Was just wanting to know whether this process actually will have a happy heading (can't find any on search!) as I gaze in despair at my online bank statement and watch how Barclays are really screwing us over the B*stards!! £30 came out in charges today... for being £20over my o/draft limit since y/day afternoon! I was watching it like a hawk but didn't check back in the afternoon.. went on this morning and £30 gone! God I can't afford that £30.. they have had SO much from us!

I rang and begged them to put it back as they can SEE we get paid tomorrow.. and that I have been juggling madly.. AND we have an uncleared cheque of £20 which, if cleared, would have kept us in the black.. but all he would do is offer me a Barclaycard (yeah right!) or a loan (yeah... took me nearly 2 years to pay of a £500 one from then!) and then tell me 'well actually we have done you a favour because we could have returned your direct debit to Sky as unpaid and you would have uncurred even more charges then..." Arse wipe.

We are not talking mega bucks where we are concerned.. but there is still no way out. It's all relative after all. I am trying to save money every which way but it's not enough. I am going to get these charges back (IF we do!) and bank with First Direct I think.

So has anyone actually had money back?

£435 back, and I only asked for £407!

CaptainFlameSparrow · 21/07/2006 09:36

I really need to get going with this.

wilbur · 21/07/2006 09:38

I have had £58 back from Nat West (everything I asked for) and £65 back from First Direct (accepted half as couldn't face big deal). I am poursuing Abbey and another Nat west account further as there is a lot more money that they have taken from me. The letter writing is a pain, but worth it for me to get some cash as I am brassic at the mo.

SleepyJess · 21/07/2006 09:47

So, remind me (please).. what actually happens? They respond to the first letter (within 40 days presumably.. probably on day 39 knowing Barclays!) with details of all banks charges over what period? And then you send the next letter asking for them back? And they have 40 days again? (Sorry.. I know I should look this back up.. but no time.. shouldn't even be on here this morning..)

I got £150 (everything I asked for) from Intelligent Finance. It was really easy, I just fired off the standard letter (from Martin's Money Tips).

I got almost £1800 back from Lloyds, took a long time and a bit of battling but I got it in the end

anthonykiedisbitontheside · 21/07/2006 10:12

We've worked out that the HSBC owe us £1034 in charges so we have to send off the next letter now. has anyone had a reuslt with the HSBC?

TwoToTango · 21/07/2006 11:01

Yes I got charges refunded from HSBC. Was only £75 though. They did say however that it was a one off and they would not refund any further charges. I presume this is a way of trying to put people off. I used a draft of a letter from the Which website. There are 2 or 3 letters - letter one is quite nice and then if you have no luck the next letter starts quoting legal jargon IYSWIM.
I have got letters from credit card companies etc. advising that their charges have changes to £12 for some transactions - so I think "people power" must be working.
I would say persist, keep copies of everything you sent, keep chasing them and don't give up if they take ages to respond as that is probably what they want.

Scoobydooooo · 21/07/2006 11:06

Yes £250 with the halifax but it was a bit of a battle but got there in the end goodluck

i was going to do this but then have heard of peoples account being closed. I am thinking of acknowledging that i have been charged for being overdrawn(or whatever) but claiming back anything OVER the £12 that they can charge me...better idea?

(trying to stay on the good side of RBoS as may need oodles of money from them soon)

longwaytogo · 21/07/2006 17:19

I really need to do this was charged £90 the other day for being over the overdraft limit

golds · 21/07/2006 17:28

I had a letter from Natwest yesterday, responding to my 2nd letter saying that they are now looking further into it, first letter they sent back was a tough you knew the charges type letter - I am not giving up on this, we are talking approx £4500 over the last 6 years, they put us in a dire position when life was bad, so I am going to fight this. You go for it, the more people who complain the better I would think

SleepyJess · 21/07/2006 18:17

How far back can you claim for?

OP posts:
madcamper · 21/07/2006 19:51

I think its 5 or 6 years you can go back. Can't remember where I've seen that info though. Unless you've kept all your bank statements though I think they will charge about £10 for each copy statement you request. I'm sure that there is another thread with all the info on

madcamper · 21/07/2006 19:53

this is it here

Charlene1 · 22/07/2006 20:59

Can you claim if the account was closed within the last 6 years?

olivia35 · 22/07/2006 23:04

Madcamper - Data Protection Act says they can only charge you £10 max for access to info about your account. They may like you to THINK it'll be £10/statement so not worth bothering...

There's a good letter template on Bank Action Group for requesting the info under the DPA. You need to register on the BAG forum.

mummyoftwins · 24/07/2006 14:13

Hi SJ
I received a pack that explained the whole process - sent to me by someone else on your other ''fave'' parenting site. If you want a copy, let me know.

Mazzarella · 24/07/2006 18:19
