Arrgghh sodding pay at pump

I didn't realise it takes a day or 2 to be debited. I woke up this morning to find I've had bank charges taken for being overdrawn after using tesco pay at pump. I now have the princely sum of £2.30 until Tuesday!

Luckily the cupboards are well stocked but I'd like to warn others who didn't know about this or it could really bugger up someone's finances!

Oh and B&M take 3 days to debit the money Angry

Surely a debit card means it goes out straight away?

I hate this :(
Asda do it too, admittedly it's probably my own fault for not keeping good enough track of my money but I absolutely hate checking my bank, then checking again 3 days later and seeing I've been debited £50 that I spent days ago!!!

ilovepowerhoop · 01/12/2013 10:47

most debit card payments take a few days to come out your account - I dont know any that come out immediately. Sometimes the money is ring fenced so you cant spend it. Surely its up to you to know how much you have spent and what has come out of your account.

ilovepowerhoop · 01/12/2013 10:47

p.s. I use a mobile app and can check easily what has come out my account and get an up to date balance

Kyrptonite · 01/12/2013 11:04

I have the bank app. It should come off my available balance immediately like most transactions do. If I haven't checked before filling up then I end up fucking up.

Boots once took 2 weeks to take my money, pain in the arse.

Whatnamenext · 01/12/2013 22:06

I've never seen a debit card transaction come out immediately. I run a ridiculously anal spreadsheet for this reason.

Our bank balance is currently £1500 but after direct debits, cheques and debit card transactions are taken out, cleared funds are significantly less. I would have no idea without a spreadsheet. (Tracker apps would also work).

AntoinetteCosway · 01/12/2013 22:10

PocketMoney app is great for knowing what you've got down to the penny, so even if a transaction hadn't cleared yet you know your true balance. There was a thread on here recently where the consensus was that knowing how much you have to the last penny is ridiculous and unnecessary. I think precisely the opposite!

I took dd to Pizza Hut yesterday after being brave at the dentist and that came out immediately. Also the bill for my check up (£18) did too. Does it depend on the bank? i'm with the Yorkshire Bank.

ilovepowerhoop · 03/12/2013 21:13

did it show on your statement or on your available balance? They can put an earmark on your account for the amount of the payment so you cant spend it but it only comes off your available balance. The payment itself then takes 1 or 2 days (or more) before showing as coming out your account on your statement.

applecrumbleandcream · 03/12/2013 21:48

Ah sorry ilove I think your right then. I looked on line when I got home and it had taken it off available balance but on the actual statement the line read something like 'debit transaction' not saying Pizza Hut and same with the dentist.....doh!!

Kyrptonite · 03/12/2013 22:04

It's not coming off available balance for a few days which then makes me think I have x amount available when really I don't.

I may have sent a ranty email to the bank about it the other day.

I would find it very annoying if it doesn't even come off immediate balance. That would leave me so confused. Suppose it's who you bank with then

applecrumbleandcream · 03/12/2013 22:40

not immediate balance....available balance

Rockchick1984 · 04/12/2013 09:37

Its nothing to do with your bank, it's the retailer. Some retailers use a floor limit, so if your transaction is below a certain amount they just agree to authorise it rather than contacting your bank to check if you have the funds available. If they do this then the bank can't take it off your available balance as they don't know you've spent it, until the retailer claims the money!

Twunk · 04/12/2013 09:40

I don't understand this. Where I'm living now (NL) my transactions show immediately - my husband has been known to follow my progress round town on the bank app! (Not in a stalker way, at least I hope not). Obviously the systems are different but it's not beyond the wit of man...
