child benefit/tax return - help needed!

My husband is trying his best to fill out a tax return form online due to us receiving a letter saying that we are basically not entitled to child benefit. We're fine with this and have now opted out.
Thing is, you need a friggin' PhD to work it out! We're not sure what mistake he has made as we've been over it but it is saying in 2 years of receiving child benefit we owe £300,000 to THEM!!!
Can't be right surely????? It was saying he owes that much on a loan. He says he's paid them off (left uni in 1999) but he is doing a PhD paid for by his workplace and has only been on the course 18 months and has not applied for a loan as he is full time employed and paid.
He's tried changing numbers when going back, changed lots of things but still coming out with that figure.
Please help before we put the house on the market and do a midnight runner!

He must have a decimal point in the wrong place somewhere .. or worse. What software are you using to fill out the self-assessment form and, if you haven't got it already, can I recommend TaxCalc?

Not using any software. Just putting in figures from his P60 and his statement of benefits from work.

We think you were right. He made a huge error with the decimal point. He put down he earned half a million pounds!

That'll certainly bump up your tax liability :)

Good! Did a similar thing (on paper) many years ago with child tax credits. Although I corrected mistake before sending off form, they still thought DH earned £2500 pa.And wanted to give us £££££ month.
