freezer food spoilage claim on house ins - is it worth it?

Our freezer was off for 8 hrs due to a power cut and everything in the fridge and freezer was ruined. I've chucked it all out and was thinking of claiming on the house insurance but when I tot it all up it only comes to £120 and there is an excess of £50. Has anyone any experience of this? Is it worth claiming £70 or will my premium increase by more than this because of the claim?

Isn't there a "no claims" element of house insurance these days? If so then it would probably cost you much more than that in the long-run. You can probably ask the insiracne company - they should be upfront with you.

I looked at my insurance and it covers unlimited for freezer. Dont know the answer but thought it might help.

Only your insurers could really answer that question, but they probably won't. How much has your insurance gone up year-on-year? I imagine that it probably already increases by a similar amount, so adding a claim would increase your increase. I doubt it would be worthwhile.

Lat time I made a claim ( a couple of years ago) I got the impression that it wasn't worth claiming for less than about £150 after the excess. Bit of a swizz really, but I suppose it's the really big ones you need to be covered for.

we've claimed on ours - ours was off for 8 hrs as well yesterday! You're not in Leicester by anychance?!

Make sure you keep the food as evidence!!! Ours broke down one christmas and I claimed as it was full of christmas food.

I phoned and the advisor said it was ok to put the food out in the bucket and allow it to be collected as I explained it would be lying for ages. Then I got a phonecall asking when someone ould out to investigate my claim. PITA as it was frezzing so I could have kept the stuff in the porch or something. Arguments ensued and they gave in eventually.
