House selling and buying - what's the order of doing stuff?

Have never sold and bought a house simultaneously so, what do I do?

  1. Put my house up for sale and get offer

  2. Discuss mortgage with someone (Who? Online? Best to go in person to building soc/bank?) and get some kind of statement about what I can borrow

  3. Look for house to buy.

What else?

Thanks

Instruct a solicitor probably after 1., perhaps getting a few quotations to start with. You don't need to have a mortgage agreed in principle to make an offer and get it accepted. You could consult a Financial Adviser - but don't automatically go with the one EA "suggests" as they'll benefit from it, likewise a Conveyancer - or look at the Best Buy tables in the Money section of the Sunday papers and visit a couple of lenders.

Thanks all.

Where does one get an Independent Financial Adviser? Really dreading starting this whole preocess.

Have seen lots of house we like (and then seen them go as well ) but we are so slow and useless at finishing off teh niggling little jobs here that can't put it on the market just yet.
