Student, JSA and other finance related stuff...

Not sure whether it's best to post here or somewhere else...

Anyway, I'm doing a FT UG degree in Scotland (4 years). My husband is currently not working and has been told that because of my income (!) he is not eligible for JSA. This is because my student loan (I wish they would note it's a LOAN) would be more than we would be entitled to on JSA. The JSA ended the Friday before I started back (2nd year).

So far, so good.

However, although I am exempt from council tax, he isn't. Which is proving difficult, considering he has no income at the moment. He has been calculated as having the maximum discount (so he just has to pay the water/sewerage charge - which I think I would've been asked to pay anyway, not sure about that) but has been sticking his head in the sand about paying it (said he didn't want to worry me). I'm a bit pissed off about this to be honest, cos we're in it together. He just said he didn't want to take money away from me and the kids.

Finally, he got a letter saying that the sheriff's officers are now freezing his bank account (good luck with that, there's nothing in it) but they're looking for this past year's CT plus an old account from years before I knew him that he's positive he paid. What happens now? Obviously they're not going to get any money out of his bank account and there's no way I can cover the full amount right away. Will they still take a payment plan? A small payment plan? Or will this end up in court? He's phoning them tomorrow, but forewarned is forearmed.

I really don't want to go over reasons why he didn't pay - he didn't, I just need to know how to deal with it now.

Thanks if you managed to get this far.

Is the only household income you have your student loan. To cover everything. So if one partners income is above a certain amount then he won't get means tested JSA after six months. The council tax part sounds more complicated. You are exempt but he isn't.
