Was this right?

I know technically it doesn't matter anymore because what's done is done but can anyone tell me whether this was right?

When I moved in with then partner, I was 37 weeks pregnant and had been signed off JSA because I was too pregnant to look for work. They said I would then go onto IS. When I tried to apply for IS I was told as I lived with a partner, I didn't qualify anymore so was entitled to no help. Partners was working about 30 hours a week (zero hour contract so fluctuated) at NMW so about £190 a week. We were told we couldn't get help with anything, nothing at all, because this income was considered enough for us both to live off. When I put it into the benefit calculators it kept telling me I would qualify for income support but the benefits advisors said it was wrong.

I am curious now, looking back, should there have been some help I was told about considering our combined income was so low and I was unable to work? We were lucky that my family helped us but if they hadnt we wouldn't have afforded to live.

I don't know anything about income support as never not been working (apart from mat leave but thus us still classes as employed ) but you may be entitled to done tax credits if your family is on a low income/pay for child care when you are back at work.
