Standard Life shares anyone?

We are due a small windfall and don't know whether to take the cash or the shares.

Anyone got any advice, I know I should find a financial consultant but haven't got the money for one, this is the only money we'll have when we get it!!

i'm flogging mine. we are going to eurodisney! If i had lots of savings and no kids i would keep em, or buy more.

lorina · 21/06/2006 19:42

We had a windfall like that with Friends Providents. We took the shares instead of the cash and hoped it would grow (we had a major shortfall in the rubbish endowment we had with them). Big mistake! The shares never got to be worth the cash offer and after two years we flogged them anyway and had a weekend in bournemouth
But you never know with shares do you. You might make a killing.

Expectantmum · 21/06/2006 20:03

We are taking the cash. I was told that the best price you will ever get is on the first day of the company floating, so we are going to sell ours and hope for the best. We are strapped for cash tho and would rather have the money sitting in a savings account in case we need.

Hmm, do you get a cash offer? We've not heard anything in the last couple of weeks. We've heard what our share allocation should be but I didn't realise you could take cash - have you had something through in the last week or so?

I think we'll keep the shares and hope they grow.

GDG · 21/06/2006 20:07

californifrau - are you eligible - did you get stuff through before the vote? Both dh and I have separate endowments and then we also have a joint one. It turns out that only dh is eligible - I don't really understand why unless it's because only one of the policyholders is eligible and only one policy counts. Altogether we have 3 endowments with them and a savings account.

Got my share pack today.

Tempted to leave in shares for at least a year to get the bonus shares but really skint so could do with the cash.

Would prefer the option to split and sell some/save some on flotation but it seems to be all or nothing.

SaintGeorge · 21/06/2006 21:33

The expected share price has already dropped by about 40p and they haven't even floated yet

ssd · 22/06/2006 17:35

think we'll take the cash and run.................

Tempted to take the cash, is there a way of finding out roughly what the share price is going to be when they float?

tillibugger · 22/06/2006 18:21

you can so to standard life webside and type into the "shares calculator" to get an estimate.

tillibugger · 22/06/2006 18:22

Go to the website...not so it

Fimbo · 22/06/2006 18:24

We are keeping ours and hoping that they grow.

I had a windfall option a few years ago and went for the shares, which was a mistake as I am useless with money and paperwork and have now lost all the documents so would have been better off just taking the money.

UCM · 22/06/2006 19:43

I am going to keep mine. The way I am looking at it is. If they fall, I never had it in the first place. Oh I wish I had kept my All & Leic shares, worth a bomb now.

I believe that Standard Life have a lot of assets and they will take a tumble for a while as the market is a buyers market at the mo, but I hope they will double within a year or so.

MrsGordonRamsay · 22/06/2006 19:44

Is that you UCM ??

You have been a really good sport.

SaintGeorge · 22/06/2006 21:21

Signed and posted my form - I am keeping shares for now.

Costs more to sell them after the flotation date but I have done a few sums as to how much they would have to rise by to cover the difference. I think they might be worth holding for a few months at least.

UCM · 23/06/2006 07:19

Yes mrs GR tis me .

St George, I use computershare, dependent on the amount you are buying/selling they are v.cheap. 0.5% or minimum 15.00 per deal.

However, I am about to start using Hargreaves & Lansdown, they will do 'one offs' for 10.00 per deal and are a very reputable company. A few of my mates who are in 'share groups' use them and they are online now, which is easy.

SaintGeorge · 23/06/2006 17:20

That's the same rate I think, 0.5 with £15 min.

If you sell the lot at flotation they do it at a one off £10.

Misspiggy · 28/06/2006 20:10

Just seen this - we have some coming.
All the advice I have seen is to go for the cash now. I saw one newspaper report last week saying that the bonus for keeping the shares will be wiped out by the extra costs of selling through a brokr at that point.
Latest estimate I've seen is c.£2.40 a share, mid-way through the (revised) estimate of 210-270.
But some of the online share sites are starting to flag SL a "buy" - so there's some hope of a better price.

glorybee · 15/08/2006 09:10

how is that you are all receiving shares? can someone explain please?
