Joint to single tax credits

num3onway · 11/08/2013 08:51

My partner has moved out and so I need to take him off my tax credits claim. When I have switched from joint to single in the past it has been done over the phone with no stop in payments.
However from reading forum posts online I seem to get the impression that payments are stopped for 4-6 weeks? Has anyone been through this recently?
Also I am aware tax credits now run lots of checks to determine your ex is no longer living there. How can I prove this? I feel he will not be cooperative in changing his mailing address and tbh he gets very little mail as it is. I do have a couple of debt letters of his could I contact the companies myself with his new address or is this not allowed? I am due to take out a new contract on my house so I could get that in my own name too

Make sure all utilities are in your name (gas/elec/sky/council tax etc). Update the electoral role to take him off the address. Any mail that arrives for him, return to sender as not at this address (assuming you ask him to change his address and he refuses). Will he have a tenancy agreement at his new address? If so do you think he would be willing to let you have a copy if tax credits query it?

He is living with parents so will not have a tenancy agreement
All bills are already in my name
Can the electoral thing be done online?

Depends on your council, where I live you have to ring them and they post you a form out to complete and send back.

num3onway · 11/08/2013 09:30

Thank you I will check their website

Its been quite a while since I claimed tax credits but I changed from a joint to a single once a

Wereonourway · 12/08/2013 08:14

I work for tax credits, there's no timescale as such but 6 weeks is extreme.

They will take info over phone, won't ask for proof as such but you may be asked at a later date.

Things like mortgage/tenancy agreement, utility bills, council tax, bank statents etc.

Advisor you speak to may be able to advise you of an approx time scale

gamerchick · 12/08/2013 08:14

And was overpaid by 800 quid. Which I spent and had to pay back. I don't know how it is these days, everything seems like a nightmare now to sort out.

num3onway · 12/08/2013 08:16

Wereonourway. Do payments now stop then while they are changing your claim?

OP posts:
Wereonourway · 12/08/2013 08:25

You won't get any more payments from your joint claim, your single claim will be calculated for rest of tax year and a new schedule produced. This is all you are waiting for, it's computer generated so could happen overnight, could be a cpl weeks but single claim will be started from the day after you ended joint claim

You will be sent an award notice to show end of joint claim and a new one for single claim.

Make sure you have bank details to hand when you call as you must give them even if same as ones held.

Thank you

Three years ago I went from a joint to a single and was without any payment for 6 weeks.

I went back from a single to a joint last year and was without payment for 5 weeks.

num3onway · 12/08/2013 20:24

Urgh 6 weeks would be a nightmare

Going from joint to single was a nightmare and I was very lucky my childcare providers were so understanding. We barely managed to eat towards the end.

The second time.going from single to joint we had to take out a loan just to get by.
