Child Benefit question...

DH earns £55k and we receive £188 per month in child benefit.

We have continued to receive this amount all year but realise that, because of the recent cuts, we are now not entitled to the full amount.

We will need to repay 50% of the years amount but how does this work? Will it be taken out of DH's salary next year or will they demand the full amount back in full, approximately £1000 which I've been putting by.

Hi Tia

I don't know how HMRC will claim it back, but either way DH will need to complete a self assessment tax return and declare the child benefit on that (even if he's PAYE).

Hi - from what I understand, you are still entitled to the Child Benefit, but your DH will be liable to pay extra tax on it, which will take back about half the value.

Have a look around this website www.hmrc.gov.uk/childbenefitcharge/whatnext.htm - it seems to be saying that your DH will have to fill out a full tax form with all the details, and then you'll get the choice of paying it back in one go or have it on his tax code for next year.

Yes you have to register for self assessment via HMRC. If you search 'register for self-assessment' you fill out an online form which asks why you are registering. There is a box to tick re child benefit. You then need to fill out a tax return when you are registered.

Will you really need to repay half? Does your husband not contribute to a pension? If so this is deducted from his income. If its a private pension not deducted from salary you gross it up and deduct that amount. So you may actually have to repay very little...

What happens if you don't register for self-assessment?

We haven't had anything telling us to do this, have you?

Procrastinating - it's your legal responsibility to do so even if they don't write to you. If you don't and get caught it could be a big fine in addition to paying it back, worst case they then open an enquiry and delve into all your other affairs.

Best to just do it.

Thanks for the warning. It would be a good idea if we were actually told about this. I'll register.
